The present invention relates to a vision inspection apparatus and method using total reflection mirrors. The present invention provides a vision inspection apparatus using the total reflection mirrors comprising; a board position control module for fixing a printed circuit board; an independent lighting unit for primarily illuminating the printed circuit board; a photographing position control module for changing a reflection angle to required location coordinates of the printed circuit board; a camera for obtaining an image of the printed circuit board; a control unit including a motion controller, a lighting controller, and an to image processor to control the components; and a vision processing unit for reading the image obtained through the camera and judging whether the image is good or bad. The present invention has effects capable of obtaining a clear image of inspection objects by increasing a quantity of light entered into the camera through a stationary direct illuminating type of independent lighting unit, and accomplishing a precise inspection by preventing shadows from generating on the vision inspection of the object such as a printed circuit board on which different sizes of components are mounted.

A self-propelled steerable robot emits ultrasonic waves in forward, rightward and leftward directions. On the basis of detecting those waves after being reflected from the walls, a controller on the robot determines an angle of travel of the robot relative to a wall of a room, enabling the robot to be turned and oriented parallel to opposite walls of the room. By then emitting waves toward those opposite walls and detecting the waves reflected therefrom, respective distances of the robot to those opposite walls can be determined. By turning the robot toward the longer of the two distances, and repeating the above steps, the robot can eventually become disposed at a center of the room. Then the robot advances from the center until reaching one of four known points in the room where the respective distances between both opposite walls changes. This enables the controller to determine where in the room the robot is located. The robot then travels along a predetermined path from that point.

A travelling robot body carries a first detector which is turnable with the body for sensing changes in direction of travel of the robot body. In order to compensate for errors by the first detector, the robot body carries a compensation system for determining an error compensation factor that can be applied to signals emitted by the first detector. That system which performs its function prior to operation of the robot, comprises a drive mechanism for turning the first detector relative to the robot body while the body is stationary, whereby the first detector emits a first signal representative of a sensed turning angle of the first detector. A second detector is mounted on the robot body for determining the actual turning angle of the first detector which occurred. By comparing the sensed turning angle from the first detector with the actual turning angle from the second detector, an error connecting factor can be calculated by a control mechanism. During travel of the robot body, the turning angles sensed by the first detector are corrected by the control mechanism in accordance with the error correction factor.
