The present invention provides a novel symbol timing recovery method for VSB receivers. Systems are described that comprise a timing error detector (TED) that produces an exact symbol timing error even in the presence residual carrier phase offset, loop filter that controls the characteristics of acquisition and tracking of digital PLL loop, Voltage/Numerically Controlled Oscillator (VCO/NCO) that adjusts the sampling instant and phase, A/D converter that samples a continuous VSB input signal, and a interpolating squared root raised cosine filter that performs both matched filtering and a compensation of constant timing offset of quarter symbol caused by the invented TED. The timing error detector in this invention comprises an envelope detector, band pass filter, squaring block, high pass filter, and decimator. It uses both in-phase and quadrature-phase component of received VSB signal, is operated at twice of a symbol frequency F, and guarantees consistent symbol timing error signal resulting in the improvement of receiver's performance.

Carrier phase independent symbol timing recovery methods for VSB receivers

There are provided a VSB receiver and a carrier recovery apparatus thereof, in which a carrier is recovered using a VSB modulated signal. In the VSB receiver, a digital processing part selects a desired channel frequency through an antenna, converts the channel frequency into an intermediate frequency, and digitalizes the channel frequency by passing a predetermined band of the intermediate frequency. A carrier recovery part extracts pilot signals by using a first LPF having a first bandwidth and a second LPF having a second bandwidth, and recovers a baseband carrier wave signal from a passband signal by using one of the extracted pilot signals. A clock demodulation part removes the pilot signal from the baseband carrier wave signal and extracts a synchronizing signal. A noise removing part removes a linear noise and a residual phase jitter of the baseband signal by using the synchronizing signal. A decoding part decodes the baseband signal whose noise is removed. Accordingly, the carrier recovery can be stably performed even when the pilot signal is weak.

VSB receiver and carrier recovery apparatus thereof

Disclosed are a channel equalizer and digital television receiver using the same. The equalizer comprises a channel estimator, a channel distortion compensator and noise canceller. The channel estimator estimates an impulse response of a transmission channel from a received signal. The channel distortion compensator transforms and processes the received signal and the estimated impulse response. The noise canceller predicts and eliminates amplified noise generated during equalization.

Timing error detector for vestigial side band (VSB)

A channel equalizer of a terrestrial digital TV receiver using a VSB modulation method is disclosed. By using a precise channel estimator according to the LS method, the transmission channel can be precisely estimated regardless of the characteristic of the transmission channel. By performing the channel equalization in the frequency domain based on the estimated channel, since the channel can be precisely compensated for, and a firm frame synchronization is supplied even to the time-varying multiple path channel, it can be exhibited superior performance even a mobile channel. Moreover, since the FFT implemented by hardware simpler than the transversal filter of the time domain can be used, the equalization is performed not the time domain but the frequency domain, a longer equalizing range can be obtained.

A vestigial sideband VSB receiver includes a digital processing part for selecting a desired channel frequency via an antenna and converting the desired channel frequency to an intermediate frequency to digitize a predetermined band of the intermediate frequency, a carrier wave restoring part for extracting pilot components from a signal of the digitized pass band to restore carrier waves, and a demodulator for separating components I and Q from the signal of the digitized pass band and multiplying the components with a complex carrier wave, which is restored in the carrier wave restoring part. The carrier waves are restored by extracting the pilot signals from the pass band and detecting the symmetrical errors of the carrier wave frequency, so that the carrier wave may be stably obtained and pursued with relation to the both positive and negative frequency offsets.

Vestigial sideband receiver and method for restoring carrier wave

A VSB demodulating device and method in a DTV receiver is disclosed, in which a VSB signal is received for independent carrier wave recovery and symbol clock recovery. An A/D converter samples the output of a SAW filter with a fixed frequency and converts the resultant value to a digital signal. A carrier wave recovery portion recovers a carrier wave from a base band pilot signal output from a multiplier, and a timing recovery portion recovers a symbol clock used for a transmitter using the output of a matched filter disposed in a base band. In this case, the carrier wave recovery portion and the timing recovery portion are independently operated without affecting each other. Thus, the carrier wave recovery portion is operated stably even in case where a fatal ghost exists in a band used for timing recovery. Furthermore, since a closed loop control can be implemented independently for carrier wave recovery and timing recovery, stability of the system is improved, thereby improving performance of the DTV receiver.

Digital demodulating device in a digital TV receiver

A partial fractionally spaced equalizer for a digital television includes, a feedforward filter unit for receiving an input signal sampled at a predetermined frequency, which is divided a first region having a symbol spaced tap and a second region having fractional spaced taps narrower than the symbol spaced tap, a feedback filter unit having symbol spaced taps, a equalizer signal generator for processing feedforward tap signals outputted from the feedforward filter unit and the feedback tap signals outputted from the feedback filter unit and generating equalizer signals, a slicer for slicing the equalizer signals to generate a decision data and outputting the decision data to the feedback filter unit, and an error generator for generating a compensating error signal by subtracting the equalizer signal from the decision data. When a sampled input signal (Si) of 21.52 MHz is received, a fractionally spaced tap is set for the region of the input signal where there is a noise to perform equalizing fractionally, while a symbol spaced tap is set for the other frequency region to equalize the input signal. Thus, the noise included in the input signal can be effectively removed, and the signal processing can be performed at a high speed. In addition, the size of its circuit can be reduced.
