Systems and methods for illumination and color management in a system having a plurality of color sources and a plurality of color sensors, wherein there are more color sources than color sensors are described herein. An embodiment of the method includes emitting a plurality of different colors of light from at least two of the color sources, wherein the plurality of colors consist of different intensities of light emitted by the plurality of color sources. Colors of light emitted by the at least two color sources are detected using at least one of the color sensors. The color rendering index for each of the plurality of colors emitted is determined. A color of light to be emitted by the light sources is selected. The intensities of light to be emitted by the color sources is selected, based at least in part on the color rendering index, to achieve the selected color of light.

Illumination and color management system

A light module associated with the camera provides flash light having a spectral content that is adjustable according to one or more drive signals. The light module includes one or more emitters of light of at least two different colors that are individually accessible to the one or more drive signals. The flash light is a mixture of the light from the one or more emitters.

Adjustable spectrum flash lighting for image acquisition

A solid state light source having first and second component light sources and an interface circuit and a method for making the same are disclosed. The first and second component light sources emit light having first and second color points on different sides of the black body radiation curve. The first and second component light sources include LEDs that emit light of a first wavelength and a layer of a light converting material that converts a portion of that light to light of a second wavelength. The interface circuit powers the first and second component light sources such that the solid state light source has a color point that is closer to the black body radiation curve than either the first or second color points. A third component light source can be included to expand the range of white color temperatures that can be reached by the light source.

Light source having a plurality of white LEDs with different output spectra

A studio light having first and second light output regimes, and adjustable color temperature. The color temperatures of the first and second light output regimes may be different. The light module includes one or more emitters of light of at least two different colors. An external signal causes the light module to switch from a first light output regime to a second, higher intensity light output regime, and back to the first light output regime.

A technique for controlling a Light Emitting Diode (LED) based light system involves driving individual light sources that make up the LED-based light system at non-overlapping intervals so that light source-specific feedback signals can be generated in response to the emitted light. The light source-specific feedback signals are then used to individually adjust the light sources to achieve desired luminance and chrominance characteristics of the emitted light.

Method and apparatus for controlling an LED based light system

In one embodiment, a user-selected color point is received. RGB tristimulus values are then derived for the color point. It is also determined whether the user-selected color point is outside a color selection range of the LED light source and, if so, an error flag is set. Pulse width modulated signals for a plurality of LED drivers for the LED light source are also generated. In another embodiment, tristimulus values representing a color of light produced by an LED light source are received. The received tristimulus values are then compared to tristimulus values corresponding to a user-identified color point. In response to the comparison, pulse width modulated signals are generated for a plurality of LED drivers for the LED light source. After a predetermined number of repetitions of these actions, an error flag is set if the user-selected color point has not been achieved by the LED light source.

Methods and apparatus for setting the color point of an LED light source

An apparatus and method thereof for regulating a light source are described. The apparatus includes a light-to-frequency converter that converts light received from the light source into a signal having a corresponding frequency. A circuit coupled to the light-to-frequency converter uses the frequency to regulate light that is emitted from the light source.

Regulating a light source using a light-to-frequency converter

A system and method for generating white light involves using a combination of phosphor-converted white LEDs and non-phosphor-converted color LEDs to produce white light and adjusting the emitted light in response to feedback signals. Generating white light using a combination of phosphor-converted white LEDs and non-phosphor-converted color LEDs produces white light with an improved CRI and a wide SPD. Adjusting the emitted light in response to feedback allows luminance and chrominance characteristics of the white light to be controlled as the performance of the LEDs changes over time. The emitted light can be adjusted on a per-color basis and/or on a per-group basis, where a group of LEDs includes a combination of at least one phosphor-converted white LED and at least one non-phosphor-converted color LED.

System and method for producing white light using a combination of phosphor-converted white LEDs and non-phosphor-converted color LEDs

A light source and method for making the same are disclosed. The light source includes a plurality of LEDs mounted on a substrate and a sensor for measuring light from the LEDs. Each LED emits light having a different spectrum from the other LEDs, the average intensity of light from that LED being determined by a drive signal coupled to that LED. The sensor generates a plurality of signals, each signal being characterized by a sensor value that is proportional to the intensity of light emitted by a corresponding one of the LEDs. A controller generates the drive signals and stores a current target value for each LED. The drive signals for each of the LEDs is generated such that the sensor value for that LED matches the stored current target value for that LED.

Calibrated LED light module

A light source that generates light that is perceived to have a predetermined color is disclosed. The light source includes first and second red LEDs and a non-red light emitter. The first and second red LEDs emit light in the red portion of the spectrum but at different wavelengths. The non-red light emitter emits light at a wavelength in a non-red portion of the spectrum. A controller varies the intensity of the first and second red LEDs to provide a combined light signal that is perceived as having the predetermined color. In one embodiment, the non-red light emitter includes a fluorescent light, and the controller adjusts the intensities of the red LEDs to provide a source that is perceived as an incandescent source of a predetermined color temperature.

Method and system of controlling bicolor luminary system

Optical feedback for controlling color of light from a light source is provided. Incident optical energy of the light is detected as a function of discrete steps of wavelength. For each discrete step of wavelength, an X, Y and Z tristimulus subvalue is produced. All the X, Y and Z tristimulus subvalues for all the discrete steps are summed together to produce an X, Y and Z tristimulus value for the light. The X, Y and Z tristimulus values are used as feedback in controlling color of the light generated by the light source.

Providing optical feedback on light color

A system and method for emitting and detecting light uses a light emitting device, e.g., a light emitting diode, to emit light and to detect incident light. As an example, the system and method may be used in a digital camera, a camera phone or an illuminated device, such as a liquid crystal display device.

System and method for emitting and detecting light using light emitting diode

A light source and method for controlling the same. The light source utilizes a light generator that generates a light signal of a wavelength at an intensity that is set by a control signal. The control signal is controlled by a servo that monitors the light output of the light generator and compares the monitored value with a target value. When the target value is changed, the control signal is initially replaced by a predicted control signal based on the new target value rather than the error signal generated in the servo. This provides time for the servo to adjust to the new target value. In one embodiment, the control signal includes a periodic signal that switches between a value that causes the light generator to generate light of the wavelength and a second value at which the light generator does not generate light of the wavelength.

Luminary control system

A light source and method for programming the light source to provide a color that approximates that of a target light source are disclosed. The light source generates light at first and second wavelengths with intensities that are determined by first and second control signals that are set by a feedback controller that matches the outputs of a monitoring circuit to target signals. The target signals are generated from target values that are entered into the feedback controller by exposing the light source to the target light source and observing the outputs from a set of photodetectors incorporated in the light source. In one embodiment, the photodetectors in the monitoring circuit are used for this programming function.

Luminary control system adapted for reproducing the color of a known light source

A system and method for generating white light involves using a combination of white, red, green, and blue LEDs to produce white light and adjusting the emitted light in response to feedback signals. A light system has a light source that includes at least one white LED and multiple color LEDs and a spectral feedback control system configured to detect light that is output from the light source and to adjust the light that is output from the light source in response to the light detection. The spectral feedback control system may include a color sensor configured to provide color-specific feedback signals, a controller configured to generate color-specific control signals in response to the color-specific feedback signals, and a driver configured to generate color-specific drive signals in response to the color-specific control signals.
