A method and apparatus for determining a volume of a phase of a multiphase fluid flowing in a production tubular is provided. A magnetic field is imparted on the fluid to align nuclei of the multiphase fluid along a direction of the magnetic field. A radio frequency signal is transmitted into the multiphase fluid to excite the nuclei, and a signal is detected from the nuclei responsive to the transmitted radio frequency signal. An amplitude of the detected signal is determined and the volume of the phase flowing in the production tubular is determined using the determined amplitude and an amplitude of a calibration signal.

An apparatus and method for estimating a parameter of a fluid flowing in a tubular is disclosed. A source of a primary magnetic field is coupled to the tubular and is configured to induce the primary magnetic field in the fluid to align nuclei of the fluid in the tubular along the primary magnetic field. A transmitter transmits an excitation signal into the fluid. A receiver detects a signal from the aligned nuclei responsive to the excitation signal. A processor estimates the parameter of the fluid from the detected signal. The source of the primary magnetic field is removable from the tubular. A coil may induce a secondary magnetic field to either enhance the strength of the primary magnetic field in the tubular or substantially cancel the primary magnetic field in the tubular, for example, to reduce particle build-up in the tubular.

Apparatus of a magnetic resonance multiphase flow meter

A method and apparatus for estimating a flow rate of a phase of a multiphase fluid is disclosed. A first velocity distribution is obtained for a first set of nuclei in the fluid from a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) signal received for the fluid in response to a first NMR excitation signal. A second velocity distribution is obtained for a second set of nuclei in the fluid from an NMR signal received for the fluid in response to a second NMR excitation signal. A velocity of the phase is estimated from the first velocity distribution and the second velocity distribution. The flow rate of the phase is estimated using the estimated velocity of the phase and an estimated volume fraction of the phase.

Multi-phase flow is estimated in a flow meter by measuring fluid pressure within the flow meter and using the measured pressure to calculate a density of the flow. A total flow rate through the flow meter is estimated based on the calculated density and a PVT analysis of the fluid. A corrected total mass flow rate is calculated using a liquid/gas slip correction technique. Fluid flow rates are further corrected with a discharge coefficient that varies with changes in the Reynolds number of the fluid. The gas and oil fractions can be determined from the corrected total mass flow rate and gas fraction.

Method of measuring multi-phase fluid flow downhole

A method, apparatus and computer-readable medium for estimating a mass of silicates in a fluid flowing in a member is disclosed. A magnetic field is induced in the fluid to align nuclei of the fluid along a direction of the magnetic field. A radio frequency signal is transmitted into the fluid from a transmitter to excite silicon nuclei present in the fluid. A signal is received from the silicon nuclei responsive to the transmitted radio frequency signal at a receiver. A processor estimates the mass of silicates in the fluid directly from the received signal.

Sand detection using magnetic resonance flow meter

An electrical submersible pump assembly has a pump discharge head with an integrally formed pump discharge pressure port. The discharge head is mounted directly to the pump and couples the pump to production tubing. A static pressure port extends directly through the side wall of the discharge head. The pressure port includes a tubing connector for hydraulic tubing to run down to the gauge. Inside the discharge head, a flow limiter is located in the pressure port to stop the loss of fluid if there is a break in the tubing connector or hydraulic line. Alternatively, the discharge head may incorporate a venturi or other pressure drop structure to allow the fluid flow to be measured via a pressure drop across an orifice. The venturi may be configured as an insert to permit it to be replaced after it has become worn by abrasive flow.

An apparatus and method for estimating a property of a species of the hydrocarbon in a downhole fluid are provided. In one aspect, the method may include: imparting a magnetic field on the fluid to align nuclei of the fluid with a direction of the primary magnetic field; imparting a perturbing radio frequency signal on the fluid to excite the nuclei of the fluid; detecting a radio frequency signal emitted by the excited nuclei of the fluid; estimating a frequency shift between the perturbing radio frequency and the detected radio frequency; and estimating using the frequency shift a property of one or more species of the hydrocarbons in the fluid.

Multi-phase flow is estimated in a flow meter having a first and a second stage by empirically deriving an algorithm for the water and gas fractions, measuring pressures within the flow meter, and estimating a total mass flow rate based on the measured pressures. A corrected total mass flow rate is calculated using a liquid/gas slip correction technique. The oil fraction can be determined from the corrected total mass flow rate and gas and water fractions.

Method of measuring multiphase flow using a multi-stage flow meter

The invention relates to a method of determining the flow characteristics of a multiphase fluid along a flow path. The method involves applying a primary magnetic field to the flow of fluid in order to align the nuclei of the flow with the direction of this magnetic field, imparting a radio frequency on the flow in order to excite its nuclei and receiving a radio frequency emitted by the excited nuclei in order to obtain a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) signal alternating between a phase ratio mode and a phase flow mode. The phase ratio mode involves processing the received radio frequency in order to determine the ratio of one phase with respect to another phase in the flow. The phase flow mode involves applying a secondary magnetic field in the region of the fluid flow which varies in magnitude along the length of the fluid flow path in order to provide a variation in the magnetic field experienced by the nuclei of the fluid flow dependent upon their position along the fluid flow path. This allows the velocity of the fluid flow to be calculated. Measurement apparatus for measuring the phase fraction and flow rate of phases present in fluid flow path is also provided.
