The present invention relates generally to a chewing gum composition, as well as methods for the preparation thereof. More specifically, the present invention relates to a gum base, as well as a chewing gum composition prepared therefrom, which contain a styrene-diene block copolymer, such as a styrene-butadiene block copolymer.

A chewing gum contains a water-insoluble gum base portion containing a polyolefin thermoplastic elastomer; a water-soluble bulk portion; and at least one flavor component, which is cud-forming and chewable at mouth temperature.

The coated active agent is preferably then co-dried and particle sized to produce a release-modified active agent for use in chewing gum. The active agent may also be used in a coating on a chewing gum product, as part of a rolling compound applied to the chewing gum product, or as a part of the liquid in a liquid-center chewing gum product.

The present invention provides methods and compositions for improving the flavor duration in chewing gum. In a preferred form, the present invention provides matrix compositions comprising a hydroxypropylcellulose cross-linked with a multi-functional carboxylate to yield a matrix having a lower water solubility than the original cellulosic material. This matrix may be ground up, have a flavor incorporated therein and used in gum compositions in which it facilitates a prolonged release of the flavoring.

A process for continuously producing a chewing gum base comprises the step of compounding all of the ingredients in a single extruder. In an embodiment, the method includes the steps of continuously adding an elastomer, a filler and a plasticizer into a continuous mixer, subjecting the elastomer, filler and plasticizer to a highly distributive mixing operation and continuously discharging the resulting chewing gum base from the mixer while the adding and mixing steps are in progress.
