A rocker arm includes a follower which follows a first lobe of a camshaft and is mounted to a rocker arm body; a lock pin that is selectively moveable in a lock bore between a first position and a second position in order to prevent relative movement between the rocker arm body and the follower in one of the first position and the second position and to permit relative movement between the rocker arm body and the follower in the other of the first position and the second position; and a rocker arm oil passage in fluid communication with the lock bore for communicating oil therethrough to move the lock pin between the first position and the second position. The rocker arm oil passage is elongated in a circumferential direction relative to the lock bore.

A system for varying actuation of a combustion valve in an internal combustion engine, including a control shaft pivot housing fixedly disposed on the engine, a control shaft pivotably disposed within the control shaft pivot housing and eccentrically fixed to a control shaft disc, an input rocker subassembly pivotably disposed on the control shaft disc and having a contact feature disposable as a follower against a camshaft lobe, an output cam subassembly pivotably disposed on the control shaft and engageable by the input rocker subassembly and including an output cam profile for engaging a finger follower of the engine, and a bias spring to urge the output cam subassembly toward the input rocker subassembly. In one aspect of the invention, high lift events with full duration are produced whenever the control shaft is aligned such that the input rocker pivot center and the output cam pivot center are coincidental.

High efficiency lift profiler for an internal combustion engine

In a dual intake valve arrangement for an internal combustion engine, a variable valve lift system controls two intake valves for one or more engine cylinders. In each cylinder, one of the intake valves includes an associated two-step actuation device, and the other includes an associated valve deactivation device. To improve in-cylinder air flow turbulence, one valve may be operated in a high-lift or low-lift state while the other valve may be deactivated.

Dual intake valve system with one deactivation valve and one multi-lift valve for swirl enhancement

In a dual intake valve arrangement for an internal combustion engine, a continuously variable valve lift (CVVL) system controls two intake valves for one or more engine cylinders. In each cylinder, one of the intake valves includes an associated valve deactivation device, and the other intake valve does not. To improve in-cylinder air flow turbulence under low valve lift, one of the intake valves may be deactivated, resulting in mixture intake through only one valve, resulting in strong swirl by unbalanced flow. A CVVL-equipped engine including a valve deactivation device provides the same amount of air flow for the same engine load as a prior art CVVL engine. A method of introducing a swirl to the mixture is also described.

Continuously variable valve lift system including valve deactivation capability on one of two dual intake valves

A continuously variable valve duration system including a rocker assembly acted upon by two off-spaced camshafts for selectively varying the closing point of a valve in an internal combustion engine. An opening camshaft is rotatably driven by the engine crankshaft and controls at least the opening and point of the valve through a rocker assembly disposed on a fixed pivot shaft. A closing camshaft, rotatably connected to the opening intake camshaft through a cam phaser, is poised to take over control of the valve closing event through the same rocker assembly. By changing the rotational phase of the closing camshaft relative to the opening camshaft via the cam phaser, the valve closing event can be either retarded or advanced so as to override the opening camshaft and thus selectively vary the valve event duration.

System for selectively varying engine valve open duration

A camshaft phaser includes a rotor, a stator, a torsional rotor bias spring, and a spring retainer wherein the spring retainer is fixed to either the rotor or stator when the nominal spring preload is reached to retain the nominal spring preload in said phaser. In one embodiment, the rotor has a bore formed therein, and the spring retainer has an arcuate slot coincident with the rotor bore. The spring retainer is rotated past the rotor until a predetermined spring preload is achieved. A retaining feature is installed through the arcuate slot into the rotor bore, thereby biasing the rotor in the predetermined bias position at the predetermined bias spring preload. In another embodiment, the spring retainer is a rotatable cam feature that becomes fixed to the stator after spring adjustment is complete.

Method and apparatus for setting bias spring load during assembly of a camshaft phaser

An electromechanical VVA system for controlling the poppet valves in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. The system varies valve lift, duration, and phasing in a dependent manner for one or more banks of engine valves. A rocker subassembly for each valve is pivotably disposed in roller bearings on a rocker pivot shaft between the camshaft and a roller follower. A control shaft supports the rocker pivot shaft for controlling a plurality of rocker subassemblies mounted in roller bearings for a plurality of engine cylinders. The control shaft rotates about its axis to displace the rocker pivot shaft and change the angular relationship of the rocker subassembly to the camshaft, thus changing the valve opening, closing, lift and duration. An actuator attached to the control shaft includes a worm gear drive for positively rotating the control shaft.

System for variable valvetrain actuation

An electromechanical VVA system for controlling the poppet valves in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. The system varies valve lift, duration, and phasing in a dependent manner for one or more banks of engine valves. A rocker subassembly for each valve or valve pair is pivotably disposed on a control shaft between the camshaft and the roller finger follower. The control shaft may be displaced about a pivot axis outside the control shaft to change the angular relationship of the rocker subassembly to the camshaft, thus changing the valve opening, closing, and lift. A plurality of control shafts for controlling all valvetrains in an engine bank defines a control shaft assembly. The angular positions of the individual control shafts may be tuned to optimize the valve timing of each cylinder. The system is applicable to the intake and exhaust camshafts of diesel and gasoline engines.

A camshaft phaser control system for reducing rotor positional instability. A phaser system includes a target wheel mounted on the phaser rotor such that during camshaft rotation wheel teeth chop a signal to generate first and second interruption signals indicative of amplitude of rotor instability. An instability monitor is used to monitor the level of instability against predetermined acceptable levels, depending upon engine operating conditions (RPM, temperature). An excessive level of instability is established by engine calibration. When measured instability exceeds a predetermined threshold level for a predetermined period, an instability diagnostic becomes alarmed. A default strategy is used to correct the excessive instability by applying a bias to the phaser control duty cycle. The system continues to monitor the level of instability, and when instability falls below the threshold limit, normal phasing operation is resumed.

Method for reducing phaser rotational instability in an internal combustion engine

A peristaltic piston pump driven by a dedicated pump cam disposed on a camshaft of an engine. A plurality of valve-opening cams are disposed along the camshaft. The pump cam has a plurality of lobes equal in number to the number of valve cams and each pump lobe is disposed at 180&#xb0; from a valve cam lobe such that the camshaft valve torque and secondary oil pump camshaft torque partially cancel, reducing overall camshaft torque oscillation. The pump includes a lost-motion shuttle and spring to permit continuous response of the pump to the cam.

A valve deactivation system includes a deactivation rocker arm assembly and a free motion spring assembly. The deactivation rocker arm assembly includes an elongate rocker arm defining an aperture. A center post is slidingly disposed within the aperture. The center post is configured for engaging a valve stem of a valve of an internal combustion engine. Coupling means selectively couple together and decouple the center post and the rocker arm. The free motion spring assembly includes an inner spring retainer surrounding a portion of the valve stem. An outer spring retainer surrounds a portion of the valve stem. An inner spring surrounds a portion of the valve stem between the inner spring retainer and a disk cap associated with the valve stem. An outer spring surrounds the inner spring.

A peristaltic piston pump driven by a dedicated pump cam disposed on a camshaft of an engine. A plurality of valve-opening cams are also disposed along the camshaft. The pump cam has a plurality of lobes equal in number to the number of valve cams and each pump lobe is disposed at 180&deg; from a valve cam lobe such that the camshaft valve torque and secondary oil pump camshaft torque partially cancel, reducing overall camshaft torque oscillation. The pump includes a lost-motion shuttle and spring to permit continuous response of the pump to the cam.

Method and apparatus for reducing oscillatory camshaft torque in an internal combustion engine

A two-step roller finger follower including an elongate body having side walls defining coaxially disposed shaft orifices, a pallet end and a socket end interconnecting with the side walls to define a slider arm aperture, and a latch channel. The socket end is mountable to an hydraulic lash adjuster, and the pallet end is matable with a valve stem. A slider arm for engaging a high-lift cam lobe is disposed in the slider arm aperture and has a first end pivotably mounted to the pallet end of the body and the second end forming a slider tip for engaging an activation/deactivation latch. The latch is slidably disposed in the latch channel, and the latch has a nose section for selectively engaging the slider tip. A spool-shaped roller having first and second roller elements fixedly attached to the shaft is rotatably disposed in the shaft orifices, the roller being adapted to follow the surface motion of low-lift cam lobes. Preferably, the shaft is journalled in roller or needle bearings which extend between and through the first and second shaft orifices, being thus exposed to normal copious oil flow through the RFF.

A camshaft phaser control system including a camshaft target wheel, the target wheel having first and second teeth for measuring camshaft oscillatory instability. The trailing edge of the first tooth coincides with the negative camshaft oscillation peak, and the trailing edge of the second tooth coincides with the positive camshaft oscillation peak. During each camshaft rotation, each tooth initiates an input signal to generate first and second input signals in known fashion. During crankshaft rotation, a third input signal is generated corresponding to the rotational position of the crankshaft. From these signals, operational camshaft oscillatory instability is computed by an engine monitoring system (EMS). Any deviation from the operational instability while the engine is operating is a direct measurement of oscillatory instability of the camshaft about its nominal holding position. A change in oscillatory instability is inferred as system malfunction, permitting defensive action to be taken by the EMS.

Engine phaser control system using phaser instability measurement

A system for selectively switching the action of a valve in an internal combustion engine includes a roller finger follower having a frame and a disengageable roller. A two-part axial pin for the roller axle is spring-loaded to urge the pin axially of the roller axle to disengage the first part of the pin from the follower frame and simultaneously disengage the second part of the pin from the roller axle. Thus the roller becomes detached from the frame and the follower cannot actuate its designated valve. The roller and pins are retained within the frame by at least one torsion spring. The pins may be controllably reinserted into the sides of the roller and frame to reconnect the roller to the frame by any of various electromechanical and/or hydraulic means. When used in conjunction with a camshaft having high lift and low lift cam lobes, the deactivated follower will then actuate its designated valve according to the profile of the low lift lobes, which may be a no lift profile.
