Disclosed herein is a battery module assembly configured to have a structure in which a plurality of rectangular battery modules, each of which has two or more battery cells or unit modules connected in series and/or in parallel to each other, are stacked by two or more in a width direction (a longitudinal direction) thereof and in a height direction (a transverse direction) thereof so that the rectangular battery modules generally constitute a hexahedral structure (a hexahedral stack), outer edges of the hexahedral stack are fixed by a frame member, and coupling parts for mounting, through which the battery module assembly is mounted to an external device, are provided at one side of the frame member.

Disclosed is a power switching module for a battery module assembly in which a plurality of rectangular battery modules, each having a plurality of battery cells or unit modules connected in series to each other, are stacked in the width (longitudinal) and height (transverse) direction by at least twos such that the battery modules constitute a hexahedral structure (hexahedral stack), outer edges of the hexahedral stack are fixed by a frame member, and input and output terminals of the battery modules are oriented such that the input and output terminals of the battery modules are directed toward one surface (a) of the stack, wherein the power switching module comprises an insulative substrate mounted to the surface (a) of the stack, elements mounted on the substrate for controlling voltage and current during charge and discharge of the battery modules, and connection members mounted on the substrate for interconnecting the control elements.

Disclosed herein is a middle- or large-sized battery module comprising a plurality of stacked unit cells, each unit module including two or more plate-shaped battery cells electrically connected with each other, each battery cell having electrode terminals formed at opposite sides thereof. The battery module is manufactured by connecting electrode terminals of a pair of unit modules by welding, mounting a sensing unit, including a sensing member, to the welding part and bending the welding part such that the unit modules are stacked, and repeatedly performing the above processes until all the unit cells are stacked.

Disclosed herein is a battery management system for controlling the operation of a middle- or large-sized battery pack, the battery management system comprising: a battery management system printed circuit board (BMS PCB) comprising a circuit and elements for controlling the operation of the battery pack; a connector attached to one side of the BMS PCB; a housing including a housing body for receiving the BMS PCB while partially exposing the connector and a cover for covering the housing body, the cover is coupled to the housing body while the cover is disposed on the housing body; and a waterproofing member interposed between the housing body and the cover, constituting the housing, such that the waterproofing member is in tight contact with the interface between the housing body and the cover, the waterproofing member being constructed in a structure to be coupled at coupling regions of the housing body and the cover. The battery management system according to the present invention is constructed in a structure in which moisture is prevented from permeation into the housing of the battery management system in a high-temperature, high-humidity environment. Consequently, the present invention has the effect of preventing the damage to and the corrosion of the BMS PCB, and therefore, improving the reliability of the battery pack and increasing the service life of the battery pack.

Disclosed herein is a battery module constructed in a structure in which unit modules are horizontally stacked while the unit modules are vertically erected, wherein the battery module includes a base plate on which the unit modules are horizontally stacked while the unit modules are vertically erected, a pair of side plates fixed to the base plate at lower ends thereof such that the side plates are brought into tight contact with outer surfaces of the outermost unit modules, and a housing fixed to the base plate in a structure to surround the unit modules, the housing being provided at the inside thereof with supporting parts for supporting upper ends of the side plates, respectively.

Disclosed herein is a secondary battery module constructed approximately in a rectangular parallelepiped structure. The battery module includes a pair of side members (right and left side members) having pluralities of grooves formed at the inside surfaces thereof such that the sides of unit cells are securely fitted in the grooves and at least one connection member integrally formed with the side members such that the side members are spaced apart from each other by the width of the unit cells while the grooves of the side members face each other. A medium- or large-sized battery system is manufactured using one or more secondary battery module. The secondary battery module allows a plurality of unit cells to be mounted in the battery module with high density. Consequently, the total size of the battery system can be considerably reduced, and the electrical connection between the electrodes is highly stable. Furthermore, a risk of an engineer or a user being exposed to the electrical short-circuits is minimized, and a risk of electrical short-circuits due to external forces is greatly reduced.

Secondary battery module, a battery system including the secondary battery module and method of manufacture of the battery system

A battery cartridge includes a pair of outer frame members for receiving unit cells and an inner frame member disposed between the outer frame members. The unit cells are mounted between the outer and inner frame members. The inner frame member has a plurality of through-holes, which communicate with the outside while the unit cells are mounted between the outer and inner frame members. An opened type battery module includes such a battery cartridge. The battery cartridge and the battery module have a high structural integration and mechanical strength. Consequently, the present invention has the effect of minimizing the size of a battery system, stably mounting unit cells having low mechanical strength, and effectively removing heat from the unit cells.

Disclosed herein is a housing member for a battery module, which is mounted to at least one side of the battery module such that a flow channel of refrigerant is defined in the battery module having unit cells stacked therein, wherein the housing member is provided with electrically connecting members for electrically connecting electrode terminals of the unit cells with each other and/or electrically connecting an external device to the electrode terminals, the electrically connecting members being integrally formed at the housing member. The housing member according to the present invention is manufactured in a structure in which the electrically connecting members are integrally formed at the housing member. Consequently, the manufacturing costs of the housing member are reduced. Furthermore, the assembly process of the battery module is greatly simplified, and the occurrence of short circuits caused by an engineer's mistake is effectively prevented.

Disclosed herein is a member for mechanically and electrically connecting two or more objects, including an insulation body having a plurality of coupling holes for coupling the objects formed therein, a plate-shaped conductive strip mounted at the rear surface of the insulation body in the diagonal direction of the insulation body while the conductive strip is isolated from the front surface of the insulation body, the conductive strip having connection holes formed at opposite ends thereof such that the connection holes communicate with the insulation body, and a connecting bar constructed such that the connecting bar can be inserted into the corresponding connection hole of the conductive strip while the strip is connected to the objects. The connecting member accomplishes excellent mechanical connection and stable electrical connection of objects, easy assembly and disassembly, and low possibility of short circuits. Furthermore, the objects can be connected with each other in a compact structure, and therefore, the connecting member according to the present invention can be preferably used to connect battery modules constituting a medium- or large-sized battery system, especially, for electric vehicles or hybrid electric vehicles.

Mechanically and electrically connecting member

Disclosed herein is a terminal-connecting device including an electrically insulating hollow connecting device body having an open upper end, and an electrically insulating cover coupled to the open upper end of the connecting device body. The terminal-connecting device is constructed such that a plate-shaped conductive bus bar is mounted to the lower end of the connecting device body, two or more terminal insertion holes are formed in the lower end of the connecting device body and the bus bar, the terminal insertion holes formed in the lower end of the connecting device body communicating with the terminal insertion holes formed in the bus bar, and a connecting member insertion slit is formed in one side of connecting device body for allowing further connection of the corresponding electrode terminal to an external connecting member, as occasion demands. The electrical connection between the electrode terminals and the electrical connection between the external connecting member and the corresponding electrode terminal can be easily and conveniently accomplished through the use of the terminal-connecting device according to the present invention. Also, the terminal connection part is isolated from the outside, whereby the occurrence of short circuits and the occurrence of corrosion due to moisture are effectively prevented. The terminal-connecting device according to the present invention is preferably used in manufacturing a medium- or large-sized battery system, especially, for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles.
