A method of charging a secondary battery and a charging device that can improve stability and extend the life span of the battery. When the secondary battery includes a plurality of cells, the charging method is changed when a voltage imbalance from 100 mV to 300 mV occurs among the cells. In that range, the charging method changes from a constant current-constant voltage charging method to a pulse-charging method. When the voltage imbalance is 300 mV or more, the electricity path is blocked, shutting down the battery. When the voltage imbalance is 100 mV or less, the constant current-constant voltage charging method is maintained. The method and device also stop charging when the battery reaches full charge.

Secondary battery charging method

An apparatus for controlling a battery pack and an energy storage system including the apparatus are disclosed. In one embodiment, the battery pack includes at least one battery tray each including one or more battery cells. The apparatus may include an open circuit voltage (OCV) calculator and a state of charge (SOC) estimator. The OCV calculator may receive OCV measurement values of the battery cells of each battery tray when the power of the battery pack is turned on, and calculate a final OCV of the battery cells based at least in part on the OCV measurement values. The SOC estimator may extract an SOC value corresponding to the final OCV from an SOC table and estimate the extracted SOC value as an initial SOC.

Apparatus for controlling battery pack, and energy storage system including the apparatus

An energy storage system having a number of trays with each tray having a number of battery cells in which power is controllably stored and discharged. A first Battery Management System (BMS) is electrically coupled to a tray contained in a rack of trays. A second BMS is electrically coupled to and controls the first BMS. The first BMS includes a control unit electrically coupled to and controlling the battery cells. It further includes a switch unit electrically coupled to the control unit and selectively applying driving power according to a control signal from the second BMS.

Battery managing apparatus, battery pack, and energy storage system

A battery system having components with reduced maximum voltage tolerance requirements is disclosed. The battery system includes a battery pack with battery modules, and measuring units, which are connected to the battery modules. The measuring units have first analog front ends (AFEs) for monitoring the at least two battery modules. Each first AFE is configured to transmit information related to the monitored characteristic via an isolator to a processor configured to control the battery pack based on the transmitted information. The isolator receives the transmitted information from an AFE which is not connected to the battery module having the least electric potential or to the battery module having the greatest electric potential.

A circuit for measuring voltage of a battery and a power storage system using the same. According to one aspect, the circuit includes a switching element connected to the battery and configured to output a first signal at a first voltage level. The switching element is configured to be turned-on in response to a voltage measuring control signal. The circuit also includes a voltage conversion circuit connected to the switching element. The voltage conversion circuit is configured to output a second signal at a second voltage level that is proportional to the first voltage level. An analog-digital converter is configured to receive the second signal and convert the received second signal into a digital signal. A controller is configured to transfer the voltage measurement control signal to the switching element, and receive the digital signal from the analog-digital converter.

Circuit for measuring voltage of battery and power storage system using the same

A secondary battery pack is described that is rechargeable and has a large capacity. The secondary pack has multiple battery units and at least one controller. Each battery unit of the battery pack includes a cell unit and a cell balancing system. In one embodiment, the cell balancing system has at least three detachable connections for connecting the cell balancing system to the cell unit, the controller or to other cell balancing units. The connections allow the cell balancing systems to be detached from the battery units and reused.

An energy storage system which balances cell voltages and a method of balancing cell voltages are disclosed. The system and method use a temperature of balancing resistors to determine a time for the balancing resistors to be selectively connected across battery cells so as to balance the battery cells.

A battery system includes a rack having a plurality of battery tray positions, a battery tray in a corresponding battery tray position among the battery tray positions, and a system management unit electrically coupled to the battery tray. Each of the battery tray positions is associated with position information, and the battery tray has an identifier. A battery protection circuit and a method of controlling the same is disclosed. The battery protection circuit includes: a battery management system for controlling charging and discharging of a battery; and a reset control circuit for controlling a reset operation of the battery management system. The battery management system includes: a reset terminal to which a first voltage for determining reset is applied; and a reset prevention terminal to which a second voltage for determining reset prevention of the battery management system is applied. The reset control circuit is connected between the reset terminal and the reset prevention terminal to control the applying of the first voltage to the reset prevention terminal. Accordingly, an unintended reset operation of the battery management system may be prevented.

Battery protection circuit and method of controlling the same

A secondary battery includes a protection circuit module (PCM) electrically connected to a bare cell. The bare cell is wrapped with a first sheet, a water permeable second sheet placed on the first sheet, and a submergence label placed between the first sheet and the water permeable second sheet. The submergence label indicates if the bare cell has been exposed to moisture. The label sheet further has a stacking structure, wherein the second sheet is placed on top of the first sheet and the submergence label is interposed between the first sheet and the second sheet. Accordingly, it is possible to determine whether a user has disassembled, modified, or reused the battery and it is possible to easily verify whether or not the secondary battery has been submerged in a liquid due to a user's carelessness or mistake.

A battery pack including a plurality of battery cells and a method of controlling the battery pack are provided. The method includes: permanently cutting off charging and discharging paths of the battery pack; and discharging one or more of the battery cells when a condition of which satisfies a reference condition. Therefore, state of the battery pack changes from its failure state to a stable state.

A battery system is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes i) a plurality of battery modules each of which is configured to store power, wherein each battery module is electrically connected to at least one other battery module and ii) a plurality of management units configured to monitor states of the battery modules.
