The present disclosure relates to a catalyst for preparing 1,2-pentanediol from furfural and/or furfuryl alcohol, and more particularly to a catalyst, which is configured such that a catalytically active metal containing both at least one transition metal and tin (Sn) is supported on a basic support and is capable of increasing reaction selectivity for 1,2-pentanediol, and a method of preparing 1,2-pentanediol using the same.

Embodiments of the present disclosure pertain to methods of sorption of HO from an environment by associating the environment with a porous material such that the association results in the sorption of HO to the porous material. The porous material includes a (M)-2,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid coordination polymer, where M is a divalent metal ion selected from the group consisting of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mg, and combinations thereof. The coordination polymer has a one-dimensional pore structure and shows reversible soft-crystal behavior. The porous material may be a Mg(II) 2,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid coordination polymer (i.e., Mg-CUK-1). The methods of the present disclosure may also include one or more steps of releasing the sorbed HO from the porous material and reusing the porous material after the releasing step for sorption of additional HO from the environment.

The present invention provides a method for directly producing lactide by subjecting lactic acid to a dehydration reaction in the presence of a catalyst comprising a tin compound, preferably, a tin (IV) compound, wherein lactide can be produced directly or by one step from lactic acid, without going through the step of producing or separating lactic acid oligomer. The method of the present invention has advantages of causing no loss of lactic acid, having a high conversion ratio to lactic acid and a high selectivity to optically pure lactide, and maintaining a long life time of the catalyst. Further, since lactic acid oligomer is not or hardly generated and the selectivity of meso-lactide is low, the method also has an advantage that the cost for removing or purifying this can be saved.

The present invention relates to a method for preparing a porous organic-inorganic hybrid, which comprises gelling a reaction mixture containing a metal precursor, a water-soluble additive and water or water-containing organic solvent at a gelling temperature of 30&#xb0; C.&#x2dc;100&#xb0; C. to obtain an organogel-containing solution having a viscosity of 2 to 50,000 (cps), subsequently ageing the solution at said gelling temperature under stirring; and subsequently heating the organogel-containing solution at a temperature between said gelling temperature and 250&#xb0; C. to crystallize the solution. According to the method for preparation of the present invention, it is possible to commercially practice the present invention since the reaction can be carried out in water or a water-containing organic solvent at an ambient pressure or a slightly raised pressure under a reflux condition, as well as it is possible to mass-produce a porous organic-inorganic hybrid having a high crystallinity and a large surface even in a high mol ratio of 1:1&#x2dc;1:30 of solvent to metal.

The present invention relates to methods for absorbing and/or desorbing water by contacting water with hybrid inorganic-organic material having high surface area, and pores with the size of molecules or nanometers. More specifically, the water adsorbent has facile adsorption-desorption even below 100&#xb0; C., having high adsorption capacity, and having high desorption capacity when it is heated up to the temperature below 100&#xb0; C. The adsorbent of the present invention can be applied to a humidifier, dehumidifier, cooler and heater. The present invention also relates to a technology to control humidity using the adsorbent.

The present invention relates to a method for preparing iron-containing porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials where the organic compound ligand is bonded to a central metal and has a large surface area and pores of molecular size or nano size, by irradiating microwaves instead of heat treatments such as the conventional electric heating, etc. as the heat source of the hydrothermal or solvothermal synthesis reaction, after reacting a metal or metal salt and organic compound to form crystal nuclei by a predetermined pre-treatment operation in the presence of a solvent. In another aspect, a method of the present invention further comprises the step of purifying the obtained porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials by treating them with inorganic salt. In particular, a method of the present invention is characterized by not using a hydrofluoric acid.

Porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials with crystallinity and a method for preparing the same are provided. The method comprises preparing a reaction solution containing a mixture of at least one inorganic metal precursor, at least one organic compound which may act as a ligand, and a solvent (step 1); and forming porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials with crystallinity by reacting the reaction solution (step 2), wherein the reaction is carried out under the pressure of about 3 atm or less.
