A direct light type backlight unit having a structure in which divided luminance areas are sequentially turned on and off and a liquid crystal display device employing the backlight unit are provided. The backlight unit includes: a base substrate; a plurality of point light sources arranged in a plurality of lines and mounted on the base substrate; and a reflector sheet vertically formed between lines of the point light sources, reflecting light emitted from the point light sources.

A liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) device includes a wafer, glass, and walls formed at opposite ends of an upper surface of the wafer to define a predetermined cell gap between the glass and the wafer. A thin piezo-electric layer is attached onto a surface of the wafer and an electrode is applied with external power to expand and/or contract the thin piezo-electric layer. The LCOS device further includes a voltage detection unit for detecting a voltage generated by the deformation of the thin piezo-electric layer; and a feedback control unit for compensating for deformation of the thin piezo-electric layer according to the voltage detected by the voltage detection unit. The LCOS device achieves uniformity of the cell gap by adjusting the voltage level of the thin piezo-electric layer after bonding the wafer and the glass, and therefore, spacers are not required.

An edge light type backlight unit having a heat sink system which can efficiently emit heat generated by a light emitting element. The edge light type backlight unit includes a light guide panel which guides light; light emitting elements which are arranged on the insides of opposite first and second surfaces of the light guide panel; and heat sinks which are provided on the outsides of the first and second surfaces and emit heat generated by the light emitting elements.

The backlight system includes: a light guide panel which forms a surface light source by guiding light; and a plurality of light emitting units arranged on at least one side of the light guide panel in the form of an array, wherein when the light emitting units in the array are divided into a first region, a second region and a third region and at least one of light emitting units is included in an edge of the first region and an edge of the third region, a quantity of current applied to the first region and the third region is controlled to be larger than a quantity of current applied to the second region in order to control the light guide panel to provide uniform brightness.
