A gel polymer electrolyte composition includes i) a compound acting as a monomer for forming gel polymer by polymerization and having at least two double bonds at an end thereof; ii) an electrolyte solvent containing carbonate and linear saturated ester; iii) an electrolyte salt; and iv) a polymerization initiator. A gel polymer electrolyte formed using the above composition has excellent mechanical strength and lithium ion conductivity. The present invention relates to a non-aqueous electrolyte solution for a lithium secondary battery, comprising a sulfolane-based additive; and a lithium secondary battery using the same. The non-aqueous electrolyte solution for a lithium secondary battery according to the present invention comprises an ionizable lithium salt; an organic solvent; and a sulfolane compound of formula (I), the sulfolane compound being present in an amount of 0.1 to 5 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the total weight of the lithium salt and the organic solvent. The non-aqueous electrolyte solution for a lithium secondary battery according to the present invention can exhibit superior storage characteristic and life cycle at a high temperature, with maintaining good output characteristic at a low temperature.

A lithium secondary battery has an anode, a cathode, a separator between the anode and the cathode and a non-aqueous electrolyte. The non-aqueous electrolyte includes a lithium salt; and a non-linear carbonate-based mixed organic solvent in which (a) a cyclic carbonate compound, and (b) a propionate-based compound are mixed at a volume ratio (a:b) in the range from about 10:90 to about 70:30. The cathode has a capacity density in the range from about 3.5 to about 5.5 mAh/cmand a porosity in the range from about 18 to about 35%. This battery may be manufactured as a high-loading lithium secondary battery.

The present invention provides a lithium secondary battery, comprising a cathode, an anode, a non-aqueous solution containing a lithium salt and an organic solvent, and a safety vent for removing increased internal pressure, the non-aqueous solution having the prescribed composition and the safety vent having the prescribed operational characteristics. The lithium secondary battery of the present invention can ensure its safety even when overcharged.

The separator includes a porous substrate, and a coating layer coated on at least one surface of the porous substrate and including a mixture of inorganic particles and a binder polymer. The non-aqueous electrolyte solution contains an ionizable lithium salt, an organic solvent, and a dinitrile compound having a specific structure. The lithium secondary battery is very safe without side reactions of the electrolyte solution. Therefore, the lithium secondary battery exhibits excellent cycle life and output performance characteristics.

A cylindrical lithium secondary battery includes an anode and a cathode, capable of occluding or emitting lithium ions; a non-aqueous electrolyte; and a CID (Current Interrupt Device) for intercepting electric current and lowering inner pressure when the inner pressure of the secondary battery is increased. The cylindrical lithium secondary battery may ensure the safety of the battery with respect to overcharging and also at the same time prevent the problem wherein the CID is activated too early, such that the battery stops its operation when the battery is used in a high-temperature environment.
