A drifting particle simulator buoy system for a stormwater discharge plume which includes a GPS unit for tracking the buoy GPS location at the surface of the plume and a drogue/winch unit including a drogue chute and winch package which is lowered to the seafloor at a controlled descent rate which is comparable to the descent rate of certain size sediment particles of interest within the stormwater discharge plume. The drogue chute controls lateral drift with the underwater current at approximately the same velocity of the sediment particles of interest. A control unit controls the drogue/winch unit, including controlling the speed of the chute/winch unit to mimic the settling rate of the sediment particles of interest. A bottom detection sensor determines the GPS location where the chute/winch package reaches the seafloor and determining the depositional footprint of contamination at the determined GPS location.

Drifting particle simulator for tracking contaminated sediment from stormwater discharge plumes

A method uses flow cytometry to prepare surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for obtaining SERS spectra of bacteria. The method involves using a flow cytometer to sort bacterial cells into populations of bacterial cells based upon their biophysical characteristics. The cells may then be washed with a borate buffer to remove any chemical species that degrade the SERS response. A colloid-coated bacteria suspension is then created by mixing one of the populations of bacterial cells with SERS-active colloidal particles. The colloid-coated bacteria suspension is incubated until the SERS-active colloidal particles partition through the capsule and bind to the cell wall for each bacterial cell in the colloid-coated bacteria suspension. The colloid-coated bacteria suspension is then disposed onto a filter and a SERS spectra of the colloid-coated bacteria suspension is obtained using a Raman spectrometer.

Method to detect/identify bacterial species using flow cytometry and surface enhanced Raman scattering

A drifting buoy sampler system for a stormwater discharge plume formed from stormwater discharged into coastal waters. The system compresan electronics sampling pod for collecting integrated water samples within the stormwater plume as the buoy system drifts with the stormwater plume near the water surface as the plume travels out to sea. The pod includes a watertight section including a GPS/radio module for providing GPS (geo-position) location information and a processor for monitoring and controlling the sampling rate, a pump module and a battery module; a passive sampler bag for collecting the integrated water samples; a free flooding section including a composite sample bag module such that the pump module pumps collected samples from the passive sampler bag to the composite sample bag module at a predetermined sampling rate and a ballast module for providing ballast to the system when drifting within the plume.

Drifting exposure system for sampling stormwater discharge plumes

A method for coordinating operation of an off-grid, hybrid power system and an information technology (IT) system comprising the following steps: powering the IT system with the off-grid, hybrid power system according to a power generation management scheme designed to maximize fuel savings, wherein the hybrid power system comprises a generator and an electrical energy storage source; monitoring tasks performed by the IT system with a processor; determining which component of the hybrid power system is currently powering the IT system; and dynamically changing the tasks performed by the IT system depending on which component of the hybrid power system is currently powering the IT system such that the IT system only performs high priority tasks when the energy storage source is powering the IT system and such that a queue of low priority tasks are held in abeyance until the generator is powering the IT system.
