An engine system includes an engine housing forming a plurality of intake ports, and a plurality of fuel admission tubes each forming a fuel passage and at least one mixing air opening fluidly connected to the fuel passage between a first tube end and a terminal end surface of a second tube end. The mixing air opening may be formed in an end cap of the fuel admission tube. A plurality of mixing air openings in a fuel admission tube may have at least one of a circumferential distribution or an axial distribution that is biased in a direction of an incoming flow of intake air. Related apparatus and methodology is also disclosed.

An internal combustion engine system is described herein. The system uses a pilot fuel to assist in the ignition of the primary fuel or uses a pilot fuel rather than a primary fuel in some instances. The pilot fuel is stored in one or more pilot fuel storage tanks that are actively managed to maintain a desired physical state of the pilot fuel stored in the one or more storage tanks. A controller detects conditions within the one or more pilot fuel storage tanks and issues control commands depending on the detected conditions. The conditions can include a temperature, a pressure, or a level of the pilot fuel stored in the pilot fuel storage tanks.

Operating a hybrid power system for a machine includes combusting a direct injected gaseous hydrogen fuel in an engine operating an electrical generator, and increasing a load demand of the hybrid power system. Operating the hybrid power system further includes operating an electrical-assist compressor to supply an increased airflow into the engine based on an increased engine power demand to satisfy the increased load demand. Air-fuel equivalence ratio of the engine (so-called 'lambda') is maintained at a ratio of about 2 or greater to limit NOx emissions, and between a hydrogen fuel misfire limit and a hydrogen fuel preignition limit. Operating an engine system includes calculating a crank angle timing term corresponding to an in-cylinder temperature sufficient for autoignition of a first fuel injected at a first injection location. Operating an engine system further includes calculating, based on the crank angle timing term, at least one of an injection amount or an injection duration, to increase the in-cylinder temperature sufficiently via burning of the first fuel to ignite a second fuel injected into a mixture of the first fuel and pressurized intake air. The first fuel may include a blend of dimethyl ether (DME), methanol (MeOH), and water. Based on expected progression of in-cylinder temperatures, and fuel injection amount and/or duration based thereon, desirable controllability of combustion phasing and/or other combustion properties may be realized.

The fuel admission tubes include mixers having flow-impinged surfaces exposed to at least one of a flow of gaseous fuel or a flow of intake air and each including a detachment edge. The mixers may include fins, wedge structures, and/or a contoured outer surface of the fuel admission tube. Related apparatus and methodology is also disclosed.

A non-axisymmetric clearance is defined between an inner port surface and the fuel admission valve and directionally biases a flow of gaseous fuel from the fuel port. Operating an engine system includes autoigniting a first fuel including a plurality of liquid fuels premixed with air, to trigger ignition of a direct-injected main fuel in a first engine cycle, and receiving data indicative of an undesired heat release of combustion of the first fuel. The undesired heat release may include an undesired heat release rate (HRR) modality such as a multistage combustion. Relative amounts of the plurality of the liquid fuels are varied and admitted to the cylinder in a second engine cycle, and the first fuel having the varied relative amounts autoignited to trigger ignition of the direct-injected main fuel in the second engine cycle. The undesired heat release can be limited in the second engine cycle based on the varied relative amounts of the liquid fuels. The first fuel may include a blend of dimethyl ether (DME), methanol (MeOH), and water. The direct-injected main fuel may include MeOH and water. Related apparatus and control logic is also disclosed.

Operating a gaseous fuel engine includes spark-igniting gaseous hydrogen fuel and air, and propagating combustion gases of the spark-ignited mixture outwardly from a spark gap. The propagating combustion gases are impinged upon a cone surface of a piston so as to limit a flame area of the propagating combustion gases. Additional gaseous hydrogen fuel and air is ignited in the combustion cylinder by way of the propagating combustion gases to urge a piston toward a bottom-dead-center position.

Gaseous fuel reciprocating engine and operating methodology for reduced hydrogen flame speed

A fuel injector includes a nozzle assembly having a nozzle case, and a concentric check assembly within the nozzle case. Transfer passages are formed in an outer check of the check assembly, and spray orifices are formed in the nozzle case. A fuel volume is formed between the outer check and an inner check, and the inner check is movable to fluidly connect the transfer passages to the fuel volume. The outer check is rotatable between a first angular orientation and a second angular orientation to fluidly connect separate sets of the transfer passages to separate sets of the spray orifices. Spray ducts are in spray path alignment with at least one of the sets of spray orifices.

An exhaust heater system includes an exhaust heater and an air supply tube disposed within the exhaust heater. Relatively hot exhaust gas from an engine is directed into the exhaust heater, whereby heat from the exhaust heats the interior of the air supply tube. The heat partially vaporizes liquid methanol injected into the air supply tube. To control the amount of heating, the exhaust can be directed to the air supply tube as well as an exhaust bypass, whereby exhaust directed to the exhaust bypass does not heat the interior of the air supply tube.

An engine system includes an engine housing having a cylinder block and a cylinder head. An intake opening and an exhaust opening and an igniter opening are formed in a fire deck surface of the cylinder head. A plurality of always-open fuel admission ports are fluidly connected to a combustion chamber and arranged in at least one of the cylinder block or the cylinder head. The always-open fuel admission ports convey a gaseous fuel such as a gaseous hydrogen fuel, a gaseous hydrocarbon fuel, or still others, to the combustion chamber.

A fuel injector includes an injector housing having a nozzle assembly with a nozzle piece, and a nested check assembly of an outer check and an inner check. Spray orifices are formed in the nozzle piece in a first orifice set equipped with a first spray duct set and a second orifice set equipped with a second spray duct set. The inner check can be opened to spray fuel from the first orifice set and the outer check can be opened to spray fuel from both the first orifice set and the second orifice set. The outer check is non-rotating while the inner check can be permitted to rotate during service. Spray ducts associated with the first orifice set may have a different duct length and duct inside diameter than spray ducts associated with the second orifice set. The first orifice set may include lower-flow spray orifices and the second orifice set may include higher-flow spray orifices. Related methodology is also disclosed.

An engine system includes a first cylinder including a first piston, a second cylinder including a second piston, and a fuel injector fluidly connected to the first cylinder. The first cylinder is a combustion cylinder, and the second cylinder is an expansion cylinder. The second cylinder is fluidly connected to the first cylinder when the first piston is in at least one position in the first cylinder. The fuel injector is configured to deliver hydrogen gas to the first cylinder.
