An engine system operating and control strategy includes autoigniting a directly injected pilot fuel to ignite a primary fuel in a cylinder in a first engine cycle. The strategy further includes comparing data indicative of a heat release in a cylinder in the first engine cycle to phasing error criteria for an earlier pilot shot of the pilot fuel and a later shot of the pilot fuel. A quantity of one or more pilot shots in a subsequent engine cycle is varied, based on the comparison. Pilot shot quantity can be varied closed loop to obtain desired combustion phasing characteristics, such as when a characteristic of a primary fuel is changed during operation. Related apparatus and control logic is also disclosed.

Operating an engine includes moving a piston toward a top-dead-center position in a cylinder, and directly injecting a gaseous hydrogen fuel into the cylinder in an injection path targeting a center cone in a combustion bowl of the piston. The gaseous hydrogen fuel is impinged upon an outer cone surface, and fluids advanced upwardly along a reentrant bowl wall toward a bowl throat opening. Squished fluids are advanced from a squish volume into the reentrant bowl throat, to produce a combined mixing flow of the advanced fluids and the squished fluids around a flow axis extending circumferentially around a piston center axis. An engine system includes an engine housing forming a plurality of intake ports, and a plurality of fuel admission tubes each forming a fuel passage and at least one mixing air opening fluidly connected to the fuel passage between a first tube end and a terminal end surface of a second tube end. The mixing air opening may be formed in an end cap of the fuel admission tube. A plurality of mixing air openings in a fuel admission tube may have at least one of a circumferential distribution or an axial distribution that is biased in a direction of an incoming flow of intake air. Related apparatus and methodology is also disclosed.

An internal combustion engine system is described herein. The system uses a pilot fuel to assist in the ignition of the primary fuel or uses a pilot fuel rather than a primary fuel in some instances. The pilot fuel is stored in one or more pilot fuel storage tanks that are actively managed to maintain a desired physical state of the pilot fuel stored in the one or more storage tanks. A controller detects conditions within the one or more pilot fuel storage tanks and issues control commands depending on the detected conditions. The conditions can include a temperature, a pressure, or a level of the pilot fuel stored in the pilot fuel storage tanks.

The undesired heat release may include an undesired heat release rate (HRR) modality such as a multistage combustion. Relative amounts of the plurality of the liquid fuels are varied and admitted to the cylinder in a second engine cycle, and the first fuel having the varied relative amounts autoignited to trigger ignition of the direct-injected main fuel in the second engine cycle. The undesired heat release can be limited in the second engine cycle based on the varied relative amounts of the liquid fuels. Operating a gaseous fuel engine includes spark-igniting gaseous hydrogen fuel and air, and propagating combustion gases of the spark-ignited mixture outwardly from a spark gap. The propagating combustion gases are impinged upon a cone surface of a piston so as to limit a flame area of the propagating combustion gases. Additional gaseous hydrogen fuel and air is ignited in the combustion cylinder by way of the propagating combustion gases to urge a piston toward a bottom-dead-center position.

A fuel injector includes a nozzle assembly having a nozzle case, and a concentric check assembly within the nozzle case. Transfer passages are formed in an outer check of the check assembly, and spray orifices are formed in the nozzle case. A fuel volume is formed between the outer check and an inner check, and the inner check is movable to fluidly connect the transfer passages to the fuel volume. The outer check is rotatable between a first angular orientation and a second angular orientation to fluidly connect separate sets of the transfer passages to separate sets of the spray orifices. Spray ducts are in spray path alignment with at least one of the sets of spray orifices.

An exhaust heater system includes an exhaust heater and an air supply tube disposed within the exhaust heater. Relatively hot exhaust gas from an engine is directed into the exhaust heater, whereby heat from the exhaust heats the interior of the air supply tube. The heat partially vaporizes liquid methanol injected into the air supply tube. To control the amount of heating, the exhaust can be directed to the air supply tube as well as an exhaust bypass, whereby exhaust directed to the exhaust bypass does not heat the interior of the air supply tube.

An intake opening and an exhaust opening and an igniter opening are formed in a fire deck surface of the cylinder head. Operating the engine further includes limiting errors in targeting of the second charge of liquid fuel caused by transitioning the engine from a first combination to a second combination of speed, load, and boost, by varying an injection pressure of the liquid fuel from the first engine cycle to the second engine cycle.
