An internal combustion engine includes a method for operating including, determining, using an accelerator pedal position sensor, an operator request for power and determining an engine operating point based upon the operator request for power. A motored-cylinder temperature is determined based upon the engine operating point, and a knock-limited combustion phasing point is determined based upon the motored-cylinder temperature and the engine operating point. Engine operating parameters associated with achieving the knock-limited combustion phasing point are selected. Operation includes controlling, by a controller, engine control states in response to the engine operating parameters associated with achieving the knock-limited combustion phasing point and the operator request for power.

Method and apparatus for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine

A fuel injection system for a vehicle propulsion system includes an injector driver module that applies power to a fuel injector of an engine in the vehicle propulsion system for a fuel injection event, a voltage measuring module that measures first and second voltages at first and second electrical connectors of the fuel injector, a voltage difference module that determines a difference between the first and second voltages, and a diagnostic module with a pattern based neural network that determines whether the fuel injector injected fuel based on the difference between the first and second voltages.

The injection timing adjustment module generates an adjusted fuel injection timing when a fuel request is received and the engine is operating in a transient state, wherein the adjusted fuel injection timing is based on a base fuel injection timing, an elapsed time since the fuel request, and at least one of a plurality of engine operating parameters. The injection control module controls fuel injection based on the adjusted fuel injection timing for a period, and controls fuel injection based on the base fuel injection timing after the period.

A control system includes a starter control module, a mode setting module, a fuel pressure control module, and a fuel control module. The starter control module initiates cranking of a spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) engine in response to user actuation of an ignition switch. The mode setting module sets a mode of operation to a cold start mode when an engine coolant temperature is less than a predetermined temperature during the cranking. The fuel pressure control module, in response to the setting of the mode to the cold start mode, determines a target fuel rail pressure. The fuel control module controls fueling during the cranking based on the target fuel rail pressure.

A system for a vehicle includes a voltage measuring module, a second derivative module, a closing period module, and an injector driver module. The voltage measuring module measures first and second voltages at first and second electrical connectors of a fuel injector that injects fuel directly into a cylinder of an engine. The second derivative module determines a second-order derivative of a difference between the first and second voltages. The closing period module determines a closing period of the fuel injector based on the second-order derivative of the difference. The injector driver module selectively adjusts closing of the fuel injector based on the closing period.
