A method for specifying and fabricating non-homogeneous, anisotropic, truly functionally graded objects. The objects may have defined spatial heterogeneity (e.g., a gradient in material concentration) with local randomized distributions. This local randomness is designed in such a way that global averaging results in the specified spatial heterogeneity. The fabrication of structures is an additive process in which a material is deposited in defined patterns.

Method for specifying and fabricating an object, associated apparatus, and applications

A device for evaluation of a tissue's biological or biomechanical character is disclosed. The device uses negative pressure to draw a portion of the tissue across one or more electrode pairs disposed within the device. By measuring one or more parameters associated with an electric or magnetic field defined by the electrode pairs, in vivo evaluation of the tissue's biological or biomechanical character may be achieved in a minimally invasive manner. The device may also include an indenter to apply a positive stress on the tissue within the sidewall to further evaluate its biological or biomechanical character. A method of using the device is also disclosed.

Method and device for evaluation of local tissue's biological or biomechanical character

The present invention relates to a biomedical implant for use in a fluid shear stress environment of a subject. The biomedical implant of the present invention includes a patterned surface having a plurality of cellular niches. The cellular niches of the patterned surface are effective to maintain at least one localized layer of living cells within the plurality of cellular niches by decreasing fluid shear stress within the cellular niches as compared to fluid shear stress measured outside of the cellular niches, with the fluid shear stress measured outside of the cellular niches having a peak fluid shear stress of at least about 50 dynes per square centimeter (dynes/cm). The present invention also relates to methods of making and using the biomedical implant. The present invention further relates to a biomedical implant system.
