A method, a computer program product and a system are provided. A case expression is analyzed for redundant expressions, patterns equivalent to a built-in function, and specific functions to form a simplified expression, wherein the case expression is written in a language supported by a database management system. The simplified expression is optimized based on a cost benefit evaluation of no optimization, native code generation, hashing inputs, and a results caching algorithm to form an execution plan. The execution plan is utilized in the database management system for the case expression.

Case statement optimization

In one example, a method for evaluating a system includes obtaining a model of the system that defines a boundary between at least one failure region and a non-failure region for a performance indicator with respect to at least one variable of the system. In one embodiment, obtaining the model involves constructing a new model; however, in other embodiments, obtaining the model involves accepting or retrieving a pre-constructed model is input. The method further includes obtaining importance samples for the at least one variable that are biased to the at least one failure region, and calculating indicator values for the performance indicator by applying the importance samples to the model.

Disclosed is an apparatus and system for reducing locking in materialized query tables (MQT) for distributive functions. The apparatus includes an insert module that inserts into an MQT table a child record when a new record is inserted into a base table associated with the MQT. The child record includes values associated with the insert operation. Also included is a delete module that inserts into the MQT a child record that includes measure values that are the negative of the measure values in the base table row that is the subject of the delete operation. An update module inserts two child rows into the MQT, one negating the affected record and the other adding the values of the update operation. Each inserted child row includes a unique identifier that relates the inserted row to a parent row. An execution module generates responses using the values indicated by the cumulative records in a family.
