Described herein are chlorins, bacteriochlorins, methods and intermediates for the synthesis of bacteriochlorins, and methods of using such bacteriochlorins for, among other things, diagnostic and therapeutic purposes such as luminescent compounds in flow cytometry, and as active agents in photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Methods for making bacteriochlorin macrocycles comprising an annulated isocyclic ring and related compounds

A method of making a bacteriochlorin is carried out by condensing a pair of compounds of Formula II to produce the bacteriochlorin, wherein R is an acetal or aldehyde group. The condensing may be carried out in an organic solvent, preferably in the presence of an acid. The bacteriochlorins are useful for a variety of purposes such as active agents in photodynamic therapy, luminescent compounds in flow cytometry, solar cells, light harvesting arrays, and molecular memory devices.

De novo synthesis of bacteriochlorins

The present invention provides a method of detecting (e.g., by flow cytometry) a target compound, cell or particle, wherein the target is labelled with a detectable luminescent compound. The method comprises utilizing as the detectable luminescent compound a compound comprising a porphyrinic macrocycle such as a porphyrin, chlorin, bacteriochlorin, or isobacteriochlorin. In particular embodiments, the detectable luminescent compound comprises a compound of the formula A-A'-Z&#x2014;B&#x2032;&#x2014;B, wherein: A is a targeting group or member of a specific binding pair that specifically binds the detectable luminescent compound to the target compound, cell or particle; A&#x2032; is a linker group or covalent bond; B&#x2032; is a linker group or covalent bond; B is a water-soluble group; and Z is the porphyrinic macrocycle.

Inhibition of biofilms in plants with imidazole derivatives

A method of making a compound of Formula I' comprises reacting a compound of the formula DLCHO, with a compound of the formula to produce the compound of Formula I&#x2032;. Methods of using the compounds are also described, particularly as intermediates for the synthesis of porphyrin rods, which porphyrin rods are in turn useful for (among other things) the production of molecular memory devices.
