Technologies are provided for an opto-mechanical device for enabling surgeons to rapidly simulate proposed intestinal/colorectal anastomosis cut lines and assess their impact upon tissue perfusion prior to their implementation. The pre-selection process enables a surgeon to decide upon the locations of the anastomotic cut lines that are most likely to reduce ischemia, while preserving most of the intestinal tissue length. The opto-mechanical device may simulate a cut line by applying pressure to intestinal tissue and detecting a light pattern transmitted through the intestinal tissue before and after the applied pressure. A perfusion map may be generated to estimate perfusion quality around the circumference of the intestinal tissue at the site of a simulated cut line, and the perfusion map may be displayed as a two-dimensional graphic image of the proposed anastomosis site. Once the site of the best cut line is selected, the surgeon may activate a cutting blade to implement the cut.

Technologies are generally provided for identifying and marking the location of the laryngeal nerve prior to tissue dissection. A frame may include two multi-electrode stimulating probes, a slider with a guide movable between the two probes, and a marker probe including an anchor. The two probes supported on the frame may be inserted into tissue in a vicinity of the nerve, and a controller may sequentially stimulate the electrodes on each probe and measure electromyography (EMG) responses from each stimulated electrode. The controller may determine the nerve's location relative to the probes based on the measured EMG responses, where the location may include a lateral position between the probes and an estimated depth. The slider may be moved to the lateral position and the marker probe may be inserted through the slider to the determined depth. The anchor may be deployed next to the nerve to indicate the nerve location.

Nerve location detection

Systems and methods for remote thermographic assessment of tissue viability are disclosed. A system may include a controllable source of one or more thermal stimuli to be applied to a tissue, a measurement system to measure a heat response of the tissue before, during, and/or after the application of the thermal stimuli, and an electronic device that may control either one or both of the source of thermal stimuli and the measurement system. The electronic device may also receive tissue thermal response data from the measurement system, and may further calculate a measure of tissue viability. A method of determining tissue viability may include supplying a thermal stimulus to a tissue, receiving, by a measurement device, the thermal response of the tissue to the stimuli, and a comparison of the thermal response data to at least some viability threshold values. The results may be displayed in a graphical manner.

A heart pump is provided that comprises an elongate catheter body, an impeller disposed at the distal end of the elongate catheter body, and one or more bearings positioned between the catheter body and the impeller. A fluid supply line for delivering infusant into the catheter is provided. A fluid return line for transporting infusant out of the catheter is also provided. A pump assembly for regulating the infusant flow along the fluid supply line and fluid return line is provided as part of an infusion system.

A method for performing an in-vivo calibration of a blood pressure sensor that is associated with a balloon of an in-vivo balloon system, the sensor and balloon being associated such that the sensor is in-vivo when the balloon is in-vivo. The balloon is inflated so that a gas pressure in the balloon system is indicative of a patient's blood pressure. The patient's blood pressure is monitored through two channels, the gas pressure and the sensor. The blood pressure measurements obtained by monitoring the gas pressure are used as reference, or 'true,' blood pressure measurements to determine a mathematical relationship between blood pressure measurements obtained through the sensor and the reference blood pressure measurements. In this manner, future blood pressure measurements obtained through the sensor can be modified according to the mathematical relationship to generate calibrated blood pressure measurements.

Calibration of in vivo blood pressure sensors

A method for performing an in-vivo calibration of a blood pressure sensor that is associated with an in-vivo balloon system. The method involves monitoring a patient's blood pressure by observing the system gas pressure while at the same time monitoring the patient's blood pressure through the sensor. The blood pressure measurements obtained by monitoring the system gas pressure are used as reference, or 'true,' blood pressure measurements, and an 'offset' is determined between the reference blood pressure measurements and the blood pressure measurements obtained through the sensor. The offset can be stored in a memory, which may also store sensor sensitivity data. The offset and/or sensitivity data may be used to adjust future measurements obtained from the sensor, thereby generating calibrated sensor measurements.

A balloon catheter has a balloon membrane, a tip connected to the distal end of the balloon membrane and an outer tube connected to the proximal end of the balloon membrane for supplying a medium for inflating and deflating the balloon membrane. A pressure sensor, such as a fiber optic sensor, may be mounted in a pocket in the tip. The pocket may be filled with a flexible substance which both communicates pressure to and protects the pressure sensor. A membrane may overlie the pocket to prevent leakage of the flexible substance therefrom.

An intra-aortic balloon pump system having a leak detector comprising a processor, a pressure sensor, and optionally a temperature sensor. Gas leaks from the intra-aortic balloon pump system are detected by comparing shuttle gas pressure readings, taken just prior to IAB inflation, with similar thermodynamic histories, i.e. similar equilibrium times.
