A method for increasing the weight gain and/or improving the feed utilization of efficiency of livestock which comprises administering to livestock in need thereof an effective amount of a compound of formula (XXII): ##STR1## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R.sup.1Z is hydrogen, halogen, or trifluoromethyl; R.sup.2Z is hydrogen or halogen; R.sup.3Z is hydrogen or methyl; R.sup.4Z is --O(CH.sub.2).sup.6 CO.sub.2 H or an ester or amide thereof, O(CH.sub.2).sup..epsilon. M.sup.4 or --CO.sub.2 H or an ester or amide thereof, wherein .delta. is an integer from 1 to 6, .epsilon. is an integer from 2 to 7, and M.sup.4 is hydroxy, alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or ##STR2## wherein R.sup.6Z and R.sup.7Z are each hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbons or ##STR3## is a 5- or 6-membered ring; R.sup.5Z is alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms substituted by carboxy or an ester or amide thereof; or phenyl unsubstituted or substituted by alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, lower alkoxy or trifluoromethyl R.sup.8Z is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or R.sup.8Z together with R.sup.5Z is a carbocyclic ring.

A method for increasing the weight gain and/or improving the feed utilization efficiency and/or increasing the lean body mass and/or decreasing birth mortality rate and increasing post-natal survival rate of livestock comprises the administration to livestock of an effective, non-toxic amount of a compound of formula (I), or a veterinarily acceptable acid addition salt thereof: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is phenyl (C.sub.1-6) alkyl or optionally substituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl, and

A method for inceasing the weight gain and/or improving the feed utilization efficiency and/or increasing the lean body mass and/or decreasing birth mortality rate and increasing post-natal survival rate of livestock comprises the administration to livestock of an effective, non-toxic amount of a compound of formula (I), or a veterinarily acceptable acid addition salt thereof: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is phenyl (C.sub.1-6)alkyl or optionally substituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl, and W is optionally substituted phenyl, a heterocyclyl group, or phenoxymethyl optionally substituted on the phenyl group. Certain compounds of formula (I) are novel.

A method for increasing the weight gain and/or improving the feed utilization efficiency of livestock is described which comprises the oral or non-oral administration to livestock of an effective, non-toxic amount of a compound of formula (XX): ##STR1## or a salt thereof, in which W is phenyl optionally substituted by halogen or trifluoromethyl, or a benzofuran-2-yl group, R.sup.1x is hydrogen or methyl, R.sup.2x is carboxyl or a group O--Z.sup.4 --CO.sub.2 H or an ester or amide thereof; a group O--E.sup.1 --NR.sup.3x R.sup.4x or a group O--E.sup.1 --OR.sup.5x, wherein R.sup.3x, R.sup.4x and R.sup.5x each represents hydrogen or C.sub.1-6 alkyl, Z.sup.4 is a C.sub.1-6 straight or branched alkylene chain, x is 1 or 2, y is 2 or 3, and E.sup.1 is C.sub.2-7 straight or branched alkylene chain with at least two carbon atoms separating the two heteroatoms in the group R.sup.2x. Also described is a veterinarily acceptable premix formulation administrable in a veterinarily effective amount in feed or water comprising a compound of the formula (XX) or, where appropriate, a veterinarily acceptable salt, ester or amide thereof; in association with a veterinarily acceptable carrier therefor. Additionally, a veterinarily acceptable premix formulation comprising from about 0.001% to about 95% by weight of a compound of formula (XX) administrable in feed or water or, where appropriate, a veterinarily acceptable salt, ester or amide thereof, together with a veterinarily acceptable carrier.

A method for the treatment of cerebral vascular and neuronal degenerative disorders associated with learning, memory and cognitive dysfunctions including cerebral senility, multi-infarct dementia and senile dementia of the Alzheimer type and/or peripheral vascular disease and/or proliferative skin disease in mammals, such as humans, which comprises administering to the mammal in need of such treatment an effective amount of 1,3-di-n-butyl-7-(2-oxypropyl) xanthine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
