An Internet of Things device and method for controlling the flow of power to a device through remote instructions. The device may include a battery and a switch coupling the battery to a main circuit, the switch including a sensor detecting a first condition. While detecting the first condition, the switch may be open-circuited, decoupling the battery from the main circuit. While not detecting the first condition, the switch is close-circuited, coupling the battery to the main circuit and providing power. The device may further include a controller coupled to a wireless communications module, which may receive instructions from a remote server. These instructions may instruct the controller to send a disable signal to the switch, preventing the switch from becoming open-circuited when the sensor detects the first condition.

Internet-of-things devices and methods of controlling power thereto

Devices and methods for detecting and reporting a battery tamper event with regard to an intrinsically-safe or explosion-proof device while the device is located in a hazardous environment. The device may include a location sensor for determining that the device is in a hazardous location. While in the hazardous location, the device may detect an open enclosure event using a sensor and, if so, it may monitor for detection of a battery tampering event. The battery tampering event may include battery replacement or battery charging. The battery tamper event may be reported to a remote server over a wireless channel when it occurs.

The method and system performs measurement of electrical currents flowing in different branches of an electrical circuit that comprises the batteries and determines if there if there is a battery connection fault. The charge current used to charge the batteries is adjusted in accordance with the detected fault or absence thereof, in order not to exceed a safe current limit.

System and method for charging an energy source of a portable electronic device

A low magnetic interference battery is provided, the battery insertable into a mobile communication device, the mobile communication device comprising a radio interconnected with a microphone and a receiver. The battery comprises a battery portion enabled to provide electrical power to the radio, the battery portion emitting a magnetic field when in operation. According to one aspect, a portable electronic device having a heat generating component, a thermal sensor, an energy storage device for powering the portable electronic device, a thermal element thermally coupled to the heat generating component, the energy storage device, and the thermal sensor. The thermal element is sized and shaped so that heat generated by the heat generating component flows through the thermal element towards the thermal sensor and interacts with the energy storage device. The thermal sensor is used to monitor a thermal profile for the thermal element, and the monitored thermal profile is compared with an expected thermal profile to determine if the integrity of the portable electronic device has been compromised.

A method includes: receiving a temperature indication, the temperature indication being a function of a temperature of a power pack of a portable electronic device; determining, as a function of the temperature indication, whether the temperature is within an elevated operating temperature range; and reducing a charge termination voltage and a charging current when the temperature is within the elevated operating temperature range.

Method and apparatus for charging a power pack of a portable electronic device

Various embodiments are described herein for a mobile communication device that utilizes a smart battery. The mobile device includes a main processor for controlling the operation of the mobile communication device. The smart battery is coupled to the main processor and provides supply power. The smart battery includes a battery processor for controlling the operation of the smart battery and communicating with the main processor, and a battery module having one or more batteries for providing the supply power. A battery interface is provided for coupling between the main processor and the battery processor for providing communication therebetween. The battery interface comprises a data communication line and protection circuitry for protecting the main processor from electrostatic discharge. A communication protocol is also provided for communication between the main processor and the battery processor.

Interface and communication protocol for a mobile device with a smart battery

A communication device, and battery there for, are provided. In at least one of the battery and the communication device is provided a magnetic shield portion for routing magnetic flux away from the receiver when the radio is in operation. The magnetic shield portion can be incorporated into at least one of the battery and the communication device. When the battery is inserted into mobile communication device, the magnetic shield portion is located substantially between a battery portion, in the battery, and the receiver.
