An example sensor device is provided. The sensor device includes (a) a substrate having a first end and a second end, wherein the substrate includes a contact portion, a first sensor portion positioned between the first end of the substrate and the contact portion, and a second sensor portion positioned between the second end of the substrate and the contact portion, (b) a first strain gauge sensor positioned at the first sensor portion, and (c) a second strain gauge sensor positioned at the second sensor portion, wherein the first end of the substrate and the second end of the substrate are configured to be coupled to a rigid curved surface, and wherein the sensor device is configured such that a force applied to the contact portion of the substrate will be sensed by each of the first strain gauge sensor and the second strain gauge sensor.

Soft shear force resistive sensor embedded in artificial skin

A composition for dry reagent colorimetric sensing of nanoparticles in aqueous media, including sodium borohydride (NaBH), methylene blue (MB), and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) in the form of a powdered mixture. The composition may be formed by combining MB, HEBES, and water to yield an aqueous mixture, removing water from the aqueous mixture to yield a solid mixture, and combining NaBHpowder with the solid mixture to yield the composition. The composition may be used to detect metallic nanoparticles an aqueous solution by combining the composition with an aqueous solution to yield a test solution, and assessing a concentration of the metallic nanoparticles in the test solution based on absorbance of light by the test solution. The composition may be provided in an assay kit for sensing nanoparticles in aqueous media.

Dry reagent colorimetric sensing of nanoparticles in aqueous media

The present technology relates generally to protective helmets with non-linearly deforming members. Helmets configured in accordance with embodiments of the present technology can comprise, for example, an inner layer, an outer layer, a space between the inner layer and the outer layer, and an interface layer disposed in the space. The interface layer comprises a plurality of filaments, each having a height, a longitudinal axis along the height, a first end proximal to the inner layer, and a second end proximal to the outer layer. The filaments are sized and shaped to span the space between the inner layer and the outer layer. The filaments are configured to deform non-linearly in response to an external incident force on the helmet.

Protective helmets with non-linearly deforming elements

A protective helmet comprises an inner layer and an outer layer separated from the inner layer by a space. An interface layer is positioned in the space between the inner layer and the outer layer and includes an impact absorbing material that non-linearly deforms in response to an incident force on the protective helmet. For example, the impact absorbing material includes multiple filaments each having an end proximate to the inner layer and another end proximate to the outer layer interface, with the filaments configured to non-linearly deform in response to an incident force on the helmet.

The present disclosure relates generally to the integration of isotachophoresis (ITP) and isothermal nucleic acid amplification methods such as recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA). One aspect of the disclosure relates to a method for concentrating and amplifying a nucleic acid, the method including an isotachophoresis device, the isotachophoresis device including a porous matrix, and first and second electrodes, having a leading electrolyte, a trailing electrolyte and a set of isothermal nucleic acid amplification reaction reagents disposed in the porous matrix as described herein, and applying a voltage across the first electrode and the second electrode for a time sufficient to provide a first isotachophoresis (ITP) plug comprising an amplification product of the nucleic acid, wherein the concentration of the nucleic acid is substantially higher in the first FTP plug than in the first and/or second fluids outside of the first ITP plug.

Systems for providing electro-mechanical sensors are provided. In some embodiments, a system for providing an electro-mechanical sensor comprising: a flexible material forming at least a first channel and a second channel, wherein the first channel includes a first plate region and the second channel forms a second plate region that is substantially aligned with the first plate region; and an electrically conductive fluid that fills the first channel and the second channel.

An electroosmotic (EO) pump is provided that includes a housing having a pump cavity, a porous core medium and electrodes. The porous core medium is positioned within the pump cavity to form an exterior reservoir that extends at least partially about an exterior surface of the porous core medium. The porous core medium has an open inner chamber provided therein. The inner chamber represents an interior reservoir. The electrodes are positioned in the inner chamber and are positioned proximate the exterior surface. The electrodes induce flow of a fluid through the porous core medium between the interior and exterior reservoirs, wherein a gas is generated when the electrodes induce flow of the fluid. The housing has a fluid inlet to convey the fluid to one of the interior reservoir and the exterior reservoir. The housing has a fluid outlet to discharge the fluid from another of the interior reservoir and the exterior reservoir. The housing has a gas removal device to remove the gas from the pump cavity.

System or device for biochemical analysis having at least one electroosmotic pump

An apparatus for fragmenting nucleic acid. The apparatus includes a sample reservoir that comprises a fluid having nucleic acids. The apparatus can also include a shear wall that is positioned within the sample reservoir. The shear wall includes a porous core medium that has pores that are sized to permit nucleic acids to flow therethrough. The apparatus also includes first and second chambers that are separated by the shear wall. The first and second chambers are in fluid communication with each other through the porous core medium of the shear wall. Also, the apparatus may include first and second electrodes that are located within the first and second chambers, respectively. The first and second electrodes are configured to generate an electric field that induces a flow of the sample fluid. The nucleic acids move through the shear wall thereby fragmenting the nucleic acids.
