The disclosed embodiments include a rotating survey tool. The rotating survey tool includes a first sensor array that in operation collects a first set of survey measurements during a downhole drilling operation. Additionally, the rotating survey tool includes a second sensor array directly coupled to the first sensor array that in operation collects a second set of survey measurements while a drill bit drills during the downhole drilling operation. Further, the second set of survey measurements has a greater base accuracy than the first set of survey measurements.

System and method for improving rotating survey accuracy

An example method may include generating an alternating current (AC) output at a power source within a borehole in a subterranean formation. An electrical component may receive a direct current (DC) output from a converter circuit coupled to the power source and the electrical component. One or more measurements corresponding to the power source, the converter circuit, the electrical component, or a protection circuit coupled to the converter circuit may be received. Blocking devices within the protection circuit may be selectively caused to block current flow in the converter circuit based, at least in part, on the one or more received measurements.

A carrier system may be used to position a wireline tool within a wellbore. The system includes a wireline tool carrier disposed on the end of a coiled tubing string. The wireline carrier tool includes a tubular member and stabilizers which secure the wireline tool within an internal passageway of the tubular member. The internal passageway defines a fluid flow path which facilitates fluid communication between the coiled tubing string and any device or wellbore portion below the wireline tool carrier. As the system is advanced within the wellbore fluid is conveyed around the wireline tool through the fluid flow path to remove obstructions that would otherwise inhibit the placement of the wireline tool within a deviated wellbore. Fluid conveyed through the system and around the wireline tool may also be used to perform various well stimulation and intervention functions.

The drill string comprises a drill pipe, a motor disposed between the drill pipe and the lower end, a drill bit disposed between the motor and the lower end, and an electronics assembly disposed within the motor or between the motor and the lower end. A method for causing a desired drilling direction of a steerable subterranean drill in consideration of a contemporaneously detected formation tendency force acting on a drill bit of the steerable subterranean drill. The method includes detecting, utilizing a steering direction setting device, a direction and magnitude of a formation tendency force acting on the drill bit of the steerable subterranean drill. Further the steering direction setting device is configured to contemporaneously cause the drill bit of the steerable subterranean drill to drill in the desired direction, counteracting the formation tendency force based on the detected direction and magnitude of the formation tendency force acting on the drill bit.

An example slip-ring interface may include a first section and a second section rotationally independent from the first section. At least one conductor path between the first section and the second section may be selectively associated with and dedicated to the transmission of signals with a first signal type. At least one conductor path between the first section and the second section may be selectively associated with and dedicated to the transmission of signals with a second signal type. If error conditions occur, the signal types associated with one or more of the conductor paths may be changed so that signals of both the first and second signal types are transmitted across the interface.

An example method of calibrating a downhole tool includes stimulating a known current through a power circuit provided in the downhole tool, the power circuit extending between and communicably coupling a power source and a load. A conductor magnetic field is generated as the known current flows through the power circuit and the conductor magnetic field is detectable by a magnetic sensor included in the downhole tool to obtain sample measurements of Earth's magnetic field. A magnitude of the conductor magnetic field is then measured to obtain a measured value for the conductor magnetic field, and a relationship between the known current and the measured value is determined to calculate a correction factor for the sample measurements based on the relationship. A computer in the downhole tool is then programmed to apply the correction factor to the sample measurements in response to operational currents measured in the power circuit during operation.

An angular position sensor can include a magnetic device from which a magnetic field emanates, and multiple magnetometers, whereby each magnetometer senses a varying strength of the magnetic field due to relative rotation between components of a well tool. A method of determining an azimuthal position of a shaft which rotates relative to an outer housing can include securing a selected one of at least one magnetic device and at least one magnetometer to the shaft, securing the other of the magnetic device and the magnetometer to the outer housing, a fluid motor rotating the shaft relative to the outer housing in the well, and the magnetometer sensing a varying strength of a magnetic field emanating from the magnetic device as the shaft rotates relative to the housing.

A method for controlling an electrical actuator is disclosed. The method may include driving an electrical actuator at a power level during each of a plurality of actuation attempts and determining whether the electrical actuator actuated during each of the plurality of actuation attempts. The method may also include counting a number of failed actuation attempts, counting a number of successful actuation attempts. In addition, the method may include adjusting the power level based on at least one of the number of failed actuation attempts and the number of successful actuation attempts, and driving the electrical actuator at an adjusted power level.

An example apparatus includes an outer housing and a drive shaft at least partially within and rotationally independent from the outer housing. A drill bit may be coupled to the drive shaft. At least one gamma ray sensor may be rotationally coupled to the drive shaft within the outer housing. In certain embodiments, the apparatus further includes a housing rotationally coupled to the drive shaft, wherein the housing comprises at least one pressurized cavity; and the at least one gamma ray sensor is located within the at least one pressurized cavity.

A method for determining a configuration of a mechanical actuator coupled to a drilling shaft in a drilling shaft deflection device of a rotary steerable subterranean drill. The method includes receiving, at a controller, data representative of a present rotary position of a rotor of an electronically commutated deflector motor of a drilling shaft deflection device of a rotary steerable subterranean drill. The rotor is operatively coupled by a fixed-ratio transmission to a mechanical actuator comprising a drilling shaft receiver coupled about a portion of a deflectable drilling shaft of the drilling shaft deflection device. The method includes determining, at the controller, the present position of the drilling shaft receiver in dependence upon the received data representative of the present rotary position of the rotor of the electronically commutated deflector motor.

Accordingly, printed circuit board assemblies comprise: a non-conductive substrate having a plurality of planar conductive pathways disposed thereon; an electronic component that is in electrical communication with one or more of the planar conductive pathways and is configured to supply an electrical current thereto; a superficial metallic conductor overlaying one or more of the planar conductive pathways, at least in part, the superficial metallic conductor having an electrical connection to the electronic component and also being in electrical communication with the planar conductive pathways; and a conductive element in electrical communication with the superficial metallic conductor, the conductive element being configured to withdraw electrical current from the printed circuit board assembly.
