A delivery system is disclosed for delivering a fluid-sensitive beneficial agent such as a somatotropin, or an analogue or derivative thereof, to an animal such as a bovine. The delivery system comprises a wall that surrounds an internal compartment, said wall comprising a first wall section that limits the passage of fluid into the system and a second wall section that permits the passage of fluid into the system. The wall may further comprise an end cap which may be adapted for ultrasonic welding to the first wall section and may maintain the beneficial agent in contact with an exit. The compartment comprises a beneficial agent and an expandable driving member. The delivery system comprises an exit for delivering the beneficial agent to the animal. The exit may compensate for slight variations in the efflux rate of the beneficial agent and maintain a sufficient velocity or efflux rate of beneficial agent outward from the device while minimizing diffusion of fluids from the external environment back into the device.

Osmotic system for delivery of fluid-sensitive somatotropins to bovine

A delivery system is disclosed for delivering a fluid-sensitive active agent such as a somatotropin, or an analogue or derivative thereof, to an animal such as a bovine. The delivery system comprises a first wall section, a second wall section and a locking coupling therebetween. The coupled wall sections define a compartment, enclosing an active agent and an expandable driving member. Various embodiments of the locking coupling are disclosed.

A delivery system (10) is disclosed for delivering a fluid-sensitive beneficial agent (7) such as a somatotropin, or an analogue or derivative thereof, to an animal such as a bovine. The delivery system comprises a wall that surrounds an internal compartment, said wall comprising a first wall section that limits the passage of fluid into the system and a second wall section that permits the passage of fluid into the system. An exit passageway is provided for delivering the beneficial agent an interior compartment (18) to the animal. The exit passageway is sealed with a wax seal (30) which is expelled through the passageway (13) as the internal pressure within the device (10) reaches a predetermined 'bursting' pressure. The passageway (13) is preferably sized to compensate for slight variations in the efflux of the beneficial agent and to maintaining a sufficient volumetric outflow rate of beneficial agent in order to minimize influx of biological fluids from the external environment back into the device once the seal (30) is expelled.

The wall may further comprise an end cap which may include means for adapting the end cap for ultrasonic welding to the first wall section and means for maintaining the beneficial agent in contact with exit means. The compartment comprises a beneficial agent and an expandable means. The delivery system comprises exit means for delivering the beneficial agent to the animal. The exit means may include means for compensating for slight variations in the efflux rate of the beneficial agent and means for maintaining for a sufficient velocity or efflux rate of beneficial agent outward from the device while minimizing diffusion of fluids from the external environment back into the device.

Delivery devices which include a beneficial agent and an activating mechanism in separate compartments separated by a moveable partition are designed to deliver the beneficial agent in a pulsatile manner through an orifice. The pulsatile delivery is achieved by a band of resilient material which is placed over the orifice. The resilient material is sufficiently tight to substantially seal the orifice when the pressure within the device is below a threshold level while at the same time being capable of being stretched when the internal pressure exceeds the threshold.

Osmotically driven delivery capsules which include a beneficial agent and a water absorptive osmotic engine in separate compartments separated by a movable partition are designed to deliver the beneficial agent in a pulsatile manner through an orifice. The pulsatile delivery is achieved by a series of stops along the inner wall of the capsule which obstruct the movement of the partition but which are overcome in succession as the osmotic pressure rises above a threshold level. The number of stops and their placement longitudinally along the length of the capsule establish the number and frequency of the pulses, and the configuration of the partition controls the pulse intensity.
