A photonic device/a method of forming a photonic device comprising a length of optical fiber loaded in tension over a portion of its length, an in-fiber Bragg grating formed within the tensile loaded portion of the length of fiber, two longitudinally spaced apart supports for the fiber, longitudinally aligned channels in the supports, for receiving the fiber, a carrier in which the supports are located, and glass solder contained within the channel anchors the embedded fiber to the support, the supports being formed from a material that has a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than that of the glass solder.

A method of writing a Bragg grating in a photosensitive optical waveguide ( ) is disclosed comprising utilizing a single coherent beam of light ( ) and a diffraction grating ( ) to create two coherent working beams ( ) of light; positioning a plurality of reflective elements ( ) on each side of said waveguide; propagating the two working beams around said plurality of reflective elements, each of the beams being reflected by each of the reflective elements, so that the beams interfere at an initial predetermined position ( ); and rotating at least one of the reflective elements on each side of the waveguide to simultaneously independently control the period of the interference pattern and position of the interference pattern in accordance with predetermined requirements so as to produce the grating structure in the photosensitive waveguide.

Method and apparatus for writing gratings

The invention provides a method of forming a grating structure on a photosensitive waveguide, involving: moving the waveguide relative to a light source in the longitudinal direction of the grating, directing coherent light from the light source perpendicularly to the direction of relative movement of the waveguide and irradiating spaced-apart regions of the waveguide to form the grating structure, modulating the light and, as a separate step, passing the light through a shutter in its passage between the light source and the waveguide, and controlling the shutter to effect shuttering of the light in synchronisation with the relative movement of the waveguide during formation of the grating structure, in order to control the irradiation of said waveguide so as to keep constant the refractive index in the waveguide core averaged over a full period of said grating structure.

Grating writing method and apparatus

A method of accurately setting the center wavelength of a fiber grating fixed in a temperature compensation package, the method comprising the steps of: fixing the grating to the package and altering the size of the package in a post processing step. The altering step can comprise elongating or compressing the package so as to substantially permanently alter the size of the package. The temperature compensation package can comprise: a first elongated member having a first coefficient of thermal expansion; two second elongated members, one each attached to the ends of the first elongated member and having their other second ends closer together than the ends of the first elongated member, the second elongated members having a second coefficient of thermal expansion relatively more than the first coefficient of thermal expansion; and two material matching members attached to the second ends and adapted to provide for material matching fixing mixtures to the second elongated members; the fixing mixtures to the second elongated members; the fixing mixtures fixing ends of the fiber grating to the temperature compensation package. The fixing mixture can comprise glass of metal solder. The material matching members are preferably located within an aperture in the second ends.
