A volume compensator assembly for a vapor canister includes a partition adapted to be disposed in an interior chamber of the vapor canister and having a single opening extending therethrough. The volume compensator assembly also includes a grid pattern disposed on the partition about the opening to guide airflow to the opening. The volume compensator assembly further includes a spring connected to the partition and contacting the vapor canister to move the partition for compensation of a volume of a bed of vapor adsorbing material in the vapor canister.

The evaporative emission treatment device comprises a monolith concentrically disposed within a shell, and having one or more sealing agents concentrically disposed about the monolith and in between the monolith and housing. The shell comprises a first shell portion having an inlet portion at one end and a connection element disposed at the opposing end, and a second shell portion having an outlet portion at one end and a connection element disposed at the opposing end. The shell can also include structural features to prevent fluid leakage, enhance fluid flow, enable attachment to other evaporative emission system components, enable mounting to a vehicle, and internally seal the monolith and sealing agents.

Purging of a fuel vapor storage canister of an internal combustion engine is optimized through the provision of fuel vapor storage apparatus. A real time measurement of the fuel vapor content of the canister is enabled by providing the canister with a fuel vapor sensor located in at least one of the purge line and the fresh air port of the canister. The fuel vapor sensor is most preferably an adsorption sensitive resistor which operates on the principle of adsorption according to Vander Walls &ldquo;a&rdquo; constant, and the electrical resistance of the fuel vapor sensor preferably varies with respect to the fuel vapor concentration present.
