The present invention provides a system for achieving erythema and/or mild edema in an upper layer of skin, without causing blisters, and without the risk of high fluence levels or critical need for cooling.

Thermal quenching of tissue

A method and apparatus for treating skin disorders includes a source of pulsed near black body electromagnetic energy and a means of delivering this energy to a treatment site. A means for cooling the treatment site is described. The number of pulses and intensity of the energy can be varied. Optical filters are used to limit the spectrum of energy emitted and the filters are cooled to allow high-energy operation. The size of the treatment spot is controlled by a series of apertures.

A method for selective heating of subsurface structures in material such as tissue includes a cooling device for thermally quenching or removing heat from the top surface of tissue during or just after delivering pulsed energy to target or subsurface structures or tissue, a preferred embodiment of the invention using dynamic cooling, to quench the thermal energy conducted from the targeted structure into surrounding tissue.

A laser handpiece apparatus for use in therapeutic procedures employing selective cooling, the apparatus for use in conjunction with a controllable laser source, the apparatus including laser delivery device for controllably delivering a predetermined amount of laser energy to a preselected surface area, a reservoir having a predetermined volume, cryogen liquid contained in the reservoir, and a valve for controllably delivering a portion of the cryogen liquid to the preselected surface area.
