Upper and lower mirror image die plates are resiliently supported and have predetermined displacement values for forming vortex generators and foldline crease channels without compressive deformation in a porous sintered metal fiber sheet material. Cutters and ridges coupled to the upper and lower die plates form the respective vortex generators and channels. The sheet of so formed material is then placed in an apparatus for bending the sheet at the foldline channels to corrugate the sheet without deformation of the sheet material between the corrugation bends. Fingers align with and engage the channels. The fingers are on plates that are ramped closer together simultaneously while the fingers on two mirror image coplanar sets of plates displace toward each other as the sheet material is folded. Pins on a pair of rotating levers engage each of the finger plates of the two sets for relatively horizontally displacing the plates and corresponding fingers as they are ramped together vertically.

Method and apparatus for making structured packing element

A low pressure drop, highly efficient structured packing comprises sheet material formed into vertical preferably square channels containing vortex generators formed from the sheet material. The channels, while vertically linear, are periodically interrupted by the vortex generators providing tortuous fluid paths along the channels. The thus formed vortex generators form openings between adjacent channels providing fluid communication between and uniform flow within the different channels. The packing can be utilized in fluid mixing or those operations that require multiphase mass transfer, such as absorption or distillation. The addition of a catalyst makes the structure suitable for catalytic distillation. Turbulence is provided the fluids by the tortuous vertical path with low pressure drops transversely and vertically, with optimum liquid holdup.

Structured packing and element therefor

The object of the invention is to provide a novel combustion chamber which has an improved air supply and also ensures an optimum incident flow to the burners when the mass flows of cooling and combustion air are different. According to the invention, this is achieved in that the at least one cooling duct (10) is extended right into the plenum (13) and is formed inside the plenum (13) as a diffuser (14) having an orifice (12) leading into the plenum (13). The at least one opening (15, 15') in the burner dome (4) is arranged in the region of the diffuser (14) or directly downstream of its orifice (12). A bypass duct (16, 16') having an orifice (17, 17') leading into the plenum (13) follows downstream of each opening (15, 15'). The orifice (17, 17') of each bypass duct (16, 16') is oriented at least approximately in parallel with the orifice (12) of the diffuser (14) and is also designed so as to be offset step-like to the outside. Each bypass duct (16, 16') is provided with a pressure-regulating device (18, 18').

Combustion chamber

The object of the invention is to provide a two-stage pressure atomizer nozzle for at least one liquid to be atomized, with which two-stage pressure atomizer nozzle improved liquid distribution in the exterior space of the pressure atomizer nozzle, in particular improved fuel distribution in a premix burner, can be achieved. To this end, the pressure atomizer nozzle has a nozzle head (4) connecting the outer and inner tubes (2, 3) to one another downstream. At least two separate turbulence and/or swirl chambers (9, 10, 11, 12) are arranged in the nozzle head (4). Each of these turbulence and/or swirl chambers (9, 10, 11, 12) is connected to the second feed passage (6) via at least one swirl passage (16), to the first feed passage (5) via at least one turbulence-generator passage (15) and to the exterior space (18) of the nozzle body (1) via a discharge opening (17).
