Apparatus is disclosed for attaching to a lockbolt via a swaged-mounted collar. The apparatus includes an element which permits relative movement between a cutting blade and an opposing surface so that the collar is held centrally within the apparatus during cutting.

A lockbolt for installation into apertured workpiece members, comprising a pin having a head and a tail end provided with locking grooves and a single pull groove (), wherein an installation tool having a collet with a corresponding shape to the pull groove is used to apply an increasing pulling force to the pin tail, thereby to push the collet towards the workpiece, and as the force applied by the hydraulic piston further increases, causing the collar () to be swaged into the lock grooves, and halting the force applied by the tool either at a predetermined maximum value or when the pin tail breaks at a breaker groove formed by the single pull groove.

Lockbolt

A lockbolt for installation into apertured workpiece members, comprising a pin having a head and a tail end provided with locking grooves and a single pull groove, wherein an installation tool having a collet with a corresponding shape to the pull groove is used to apply an increasing pulling force to the pin tail, thereby to push the collet towards the workpiece, and as the force applied by the hydraulic piston further increases, causing the collar to be swaged into the lock grooves, and halting the force applied by the tool either at a predetermined maximum value or when the pin tail breaks at a breaker groove formed by the single pull groove.

A threaded fastener for installation in an aperture in a workpiece, the fastener having a rear portion defining an internally threaded aperture and a front portion arranged to engage the rear portion and having a front aperture which is aligned with the threaded aperture when the two portions are fully engaged, both portions having bearing surfaces for bearing on the rear and front of a workpiece respectively and the engagement between the portions being arranged to accurately control the distance between the front and rear bearing faces.

An insert for blind installation in a workpiece, and method of manufacture of an insert, the insert () comprising a body () and anchor stud (); wherein the stud is inserted into a through bore () in the body, part of the stud extending beyond the end of the through bore, and a part of the stud provided with opposed areas of knurling () such as threading, being enveloped by a reduced diameter section () of the body, such that crimping the stud onto the body causes material to enter the knurling, thereby firmly attaching body and stud, allowing the insert to withstand high torque.

The present invention provides a sealing plug for blind installation in a suitable hole () thereby to plug and seal the hole, which sealing plug comprises a sleeve (), a nut stem () having a shoulder (), and a head () at least part of which is radially enlarged with respect to the remainder of the stem; the nut stem being of a material which is harder than that of the sleeve; the nut stem being internally threaded; whereby, when the sealing plug is inserted in a suitable hole, with the sleeve entirely within the hole, and increasing force is applied to the stem with respect to the sleeve, axial compression is applied by the shoulder to the sleeve material abutting it, thereby causing the sleeve to deform and expand radially outwardly to engage with the wall () of the hole.

A method and fastener for fastening one or more apertured members () to an apertured workpiece (), an aperture () of the or each member () being aligned with an aperture () in the workpiece (), the method comprising the steps of inserting a fastener () into the aligned apertures, the fastener () being formed of ductile material and having a head (), a shank (), and an axial bore () extending through the shank () and into the head (), the shank () being circumferentially entire and being formed with an external screw-thread () the fastener () being inserted so that the head () engages a face of the one member (), and the shank () extends through the member () or members and into the workpiece (), and at least a part of the screw-thread () is within the workpiece (), and then, while supporting the fastener () at the head (), drawing into and entirely through the bore (), in the direction from the tail portion to the head (), a tapering, enlarged, mandrel head () capable of expanding the bore () and thereby enlarging the bore () evenly throughout its length and causing ductile radial expansion of the shank () sufficient to case the external screw-thread () to embed in the workpiece () and the shank () of the fastener () undergoing ductile axial reduction in length.

Method of fastening

An insert for installation in a relatively thin or weak workpiece to provide an anchor for a self-tapping screw, which insert is in the form of an integral metal structure which comprises: a body portion; a head portion located at or near one end of the body portion and extending radially therefrom; a receptacle portion located at the other end of the body portion remote from the head portion; and a through bore extending throughout the head, body and receptacle portions; the interior bore of the receptacle portion being substantially unthreaded for the reception of a self-tapping screw; in which the exterior cross-sectional shape and dimensions of the receptacle portion, and the interior cross sectional shape and dimensions of the body portion are respectively such that the body portion is deformable, when the receptacle portion is drawn towards the head portion, to secure the insert in a suitable hole in a workpiece through which the receptacle and body portions have been inserted so that the head portion is adjacent the workpiece and a substantial length of the body portion protrudes beyond the workpiece; and in which any transverse dimension of the exterior of the receptacle portion is no greater than the corresponding transverse dimension of the interior of the body portion in the same transverse plane; the exterior cross-sectional shape and dimensions of the body portion being such that, when the receptacle portion is drawn towards the head portion, the part of the body portion nearer the receptacle portion enters inside the part of the body portion nearer the head thereby to enhance the engagement of the deformed body portion with the workpiece.
