Methods for driving an electro-optic displays having a plurality of display pixels are described. The method includes determining a level of stress quantity for a display pixel of the electro-optic display based on at least one prior update to the optical state of the display pixel, and receiving a request to update the optical state of the display pixel. The method also includes applying driving waveforms from first or second update schemes to the display pixel depending on the update scheme used for an immediately prior update of the display pixel and comparisons of the level of stress quantity to two level of stress thresholds.

Methods for driving electro-optic displays

An electro-optic display including a first subpixel electrode and a second subpixel electrode associated with a display pixel, and an electrophoretic display medium disposed between a common electrode and the first and second subpixel electrodes. The electro-optic display also includes a display controller circuit in electrical communication with the common electrode and a first transistor associated with the display pixel. The display controller circuit is capable of applying waveforms to the display pixel by applying one or more time-dependent voltages between the common electrode and the first subpixel electrode via the first transistor, where the one or more time-dependent voltages are applied to the first subpixel electrode. The electro-optic display also includes a second transistor in electrical communication with the first subpixel electrode and the second subpixel electrode. A first enable signal activates the second transistor to place the first subpixel electrode and the second subpixel electrode into electrical communication.

Multi-element pixel electrode circuits for electro-optic displays and methods for driving the same

A bistable electro-optic display has a plurality of pixels, each of which is capable of displaying at least three gray levels. The display is driven by a method comprising: storing a look-up table containing data representing the impulses necessary to convert an initial gray level to a final gray level; storing data representing at least an initial state of each pixel of the display; receiving an input signal representing a desired final state of at least one pixel of the display; and generating an output signal representing the impulse necessary to convert the initial state of said one pixel to the desired final state thereof, as determined from said look-up table. The invention also provides a method for reducing the remnant voltage of an electro-optic display.

Methods for driving bistable electro-optic displays, and apparatus for use therein

A laminate comprising a solid electro-optic medium and an electrically conductive layer is tested by passing it over a pair of electrodes at different potentials, with the electrically conductive layer lying on the opposed side of the electro-optic medium from the electrodes. An article which can be tested by this method, and which is useful in the manufacture of electro-optic displays, comprises a layer of a solid electro-optic medium and a release sheet comprising an electrically conductive layer.

Components and testing methods for use in the production of electro-optic displays

A display assembly comprises a backplane assembly comprising a plurality of spaced backplane areas, each backplane area comprising a plurality of electrodes, the backplane areas being separated by gutter areas free from electrodes; an adhesive layer overlying the plurality of spaced backplane areas; and a layer of a solid electro-optic medium overlying the adhesive layer in the plurality of spaced backplane areas. The display sub-assembly can be produced via a single lamination and severed to form a plurality of separate electro-optic displays. Processes for producing the display assembly are also described.

Components and methods for use in electro-optic displays

The invention relates to electro-optic displays and methods for driving such displays. The invention provides (i) electrochromic displays with solid charge transport layers; (ii) apparatus and methods for improving the contrast and reducing the cost of electrochromic displays; (iii) apparatus and methods for sealing electrochromic displays from the outside environment and preventing ingress of contaminants into such a display; and (iv) methods for adjusting the driving of electro-optic displays to allow for environmental and operating parameters.
