A system and method for non-invasive and quantitative assessment of the status of bone tissue in a bony member within a living organism are provided. In one embodiment, the system includes a transducer and a controller that causes the transducer to generate a pair of axial ultrasound signals traveling in opposite directions along a longitudinal axis of the bony member and a radial ultrasound signal traveling towards and into the bony member. The transducer receives multiple portions of each of the axial ultrasound signals and multiple portions of the radial ultrasound signal reflected by the bony member and generates axial and pulse-echo output signals in response. The controller processes the axial and pule-echo output signals to obtain an axial transmission time delay and a pulse-echo time delay, respectively, and generates an estimate of a characteristic of the bone tissue responsive to the axial-transmission and pulse-echo time delays.

Dual-mode ultrasonic assessment of bone

A system for transmitting signals between a body of a living being and a virtual reality space includes a mount and a base configured to be affixed to respective first and second bony members of the body on a distal side and a proximal side, respectively, of a joint. An elongate, flexible strip is affixed at a first end to the mount and at a second end to the base. A sensor disposed on the base is configured to generate a displacement signal indicative of displacement of the strip in response to movement of the first bony member relative to the second bony member. The system further includes a display and a controller configured to receive the displacement signal and to control movement of a virtual representation of the body on the display responsive to the displacement signal and feedback of interaction in the virtual space to the living being.

System for transmitting signals between a body of a living being and a virtual reality space

A system for monitoring or controlling a remote programmable device is provided. The system includes a server configured for connection to the programmable device and a local computing device. The server includes code that establishes a data structure accessible by both devices and including a plurality of user configurable records. The server receives instructions from the local device to configure each record as an input, output or input/output channel corresponding to input, output or input/output parameters of the programmable device and to define input values for the input channels and input/output channels. The server transmits the input values and input/output values to the programmable device and receives output values and input/output values from the programmable device for transmission to the local computing device.

An invention is disclosed for locating a region of interest in the calcaneus. A pair of ultrasound transducers are positioned on the medial and lateral sides of the heel, respectively. The positioning is based on a size of a portion of the body of a subject upon whom the ultrasound assessment of the calcaneus is to be made. In a presently preferred embodiment, the length of the foot from the back to the head of the first metatarsal is used in conjunction with a proportionality constant and an angle, to position the pair of transducers. The positioning so obtained facilitates (i) reproducible measurements and (ii) comparisons of the results obtained in one person with another, because relatively analogous portions of the highly heterogeneous calcanei are assessed in both. In an alternative embodiment, a single transducer is positioned similarly on the heel, operating in pulse-echo mode.

Ultrasonic bone assessment apparatus and method

A method and system for quantitatively evaluating bone fracture risk in a living being are provided that generate a value for an index indicative of a degree of bone fracture risk. In one embodiment, the method includes the step of acquiring values for a height H, a weight W, and a bone mineral density BMD of the living being. The method further includes the step of calculating a quantitative bone fracture risk index QI associated with the living being in accordance with the formula QI=H*W/BMDwhere &#x3b1;, &#x3b2;, and &#x3b3; are constants selected based on previously obtained data indicative of bone fracture risk.

Method and system for bone fracture risk assessment

A system for configuring a prosthetic limb for use by a living being is provided. The system includes an electronic control unit (ECU) configured to receive a control signal generated in response to a command from the living being and to generate a plurality of virtual bodies on a display including members of a virtual prosthetic limb and at least one virtual object. The ECU is further configured to control movement of at least one member of the virtual limb responsive to the control signal, to determine a contact force between first and second virtual bodies of the plurality of virtual bodies upon engagement between the first and second bodies caused by movement of one of the one member of the virtual limb and the at least one virtual object and to adjust a position of at least one of the first and second bodies responsive to the contact force.

An invention is disclosed for locating a region of interest (ROI) in the radius. A method and apparatus are disclosed that use a pair of ultrasound transducers for ultrasound assessment of various properties of bone. The invention includes positioning the transducers on the anterior-posterior (dorsal and ventral) sides of a forearm of an individual. The positioning is based on the forearm length, and a selected percentage of this length at which the ROI is desired. In a presently preferred embodiment of the invention, the ROI is defined as the &#x2153;location. An arm is placed in an ultrasound fixture which has a first surface, a second surface with a raised portion against which the ulna styloid process is placed, and a third surface on which the elbow is placed. The distance between the raised portion of the second surface and the centerlines of the pair of ultrasound transducers is adjustable. The positioning so obtained leads to the ability to make both (i) reproducible measurements and (ii) to be able to compare the results obtained in one person with another, because relatively analogous portions of the radii are assessed in both. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a single transducer is positioned similarly on the forearm, operating in pulse-echo mode.

Ultrasonic bone assessment apparatus with adjustable ulna styloid support and method

A method for the assessment of various properties of bone is provided. The method includes applying a pair of ultrasound transducers to skin on opposite sides of the bone and generating an ultrasound signal and directing the signal through both the bone to obtain a bone output signal. The method further includes establishing a set of parameters associated with the bone output signal and then further processing the parameters in order to obtain the desired bone property. Two novel parameters are also disclosed, namely the net time delay (NTD) and mean time duration (MTD) parameters. An apparatus for the assessment of various properties of bone is also provided. The apparatus includes a pair of ultrasound transducers which may be single-element transducers or array transducers in any combination. The apparatus further includes various computer hardware components and computer software for generating and directing the ultrasound signal, establishing the parameter set and performing the processing. In addition, an apparatus that is battery powered, handheld, and portable and operates in real time is also provided.

An apparatus and method for the assessment of various properties of bone is provided. A pair of ultrasound transducers are applied to skin on opposite sides of a bony member. The transducers may be single-element or array transducers. An ultrasound signal is generated and directed through the bony member to obtain a bone output signal. A set of parameters associated with the bone output signal is established and processed to obtain the desired bone property including two net time delay (NTD) parameters indicative of differences in transit time for signals taking different paths through bone and soft tissue. Also disclosed is a novel means for acoustically coupling the transducers to skin, as well as a means for establishing bone mineralization through use of both ultrasound and x-ray measurements.

Non-invasive therapeutic treatment of bone in vivo using ultrasound in conjunction with application of a biochemical compound or bone growth factor is performed by subjecting bone to an ultrasound signal supplied to an ultrasound transducer placed on the skin of a bony member, and involving a repetitive finite duration signal consisting of plural frequencies that are in the ultrasonic range to 20 MHz. Concurrent with application of the ultrasound is the utilization of a bone growth factor applied to the skin of a bony member before stimulation with ultrasound. Ultrasonic stimulation is operative to transport the bone growth factor to the bone and then to synergistically enhance the interaction of the bone growth factor with the bone, whereby to induce healing, growth and ingrowth responses. In another embodiment, a vibrational or mechanical input together with a biochemical compound enhances both bone fracture healing and treats osteoporosis.

Ultrasonic and growth factor bone-therapy: apparatus and method

Non-invasive quantitative plain radiographic evaluation of bone in a bony locale of a body is performed by subjecting the bony locale to a broadband collimated x-ray beam having energy in the range of about 20 keV to 150 keV. Alongside the bony locale is a composite phantom. The composite phantom is comprised of at least two materials, superimposed on one another. An energy-selective multiple-film detector cassette containing at least two films is placed under the body and composite phantom to receive the transmitted x-ray beam. The films in the cassette are developed and digitally scanned to produce sets of composite phantom data and sets of bone data. The data sets are then numerically processed using interpolation whereby to generate the indicated estimate of bone status, namely, bone-mineral density. In an alternative embodiment, an independent measurement is made of the total tissue thickness, and the bone status is determined using interpolation based only on a single film. In an alternative embodiment, a digital array radiographic system is used to evaluate the characteristic of a tested object.

Digital x-ray material testing and bone densitometry apparatus and method

In a presently preferred embodiment of the invention, a three-dimensional scene is reproduced on a specialized light display which offers full multiviewpoint capability and auto-stereoscopic views. The displayed image is produced using a set of M two-dimensional images of the scene collected at a set of distinct spatial locations. These M two-dimensional images are processed through a specialized mathematical encoding scheme to obtain a set of N&times;K display-excitation electrical-input signals, where K is the number of pixels in the display, and N&lE;M is the number of individual light-radiating elements within one pixel. The display is thus comprised of a total of N&times;K light-radiating elements. Each of the K pixels is adapted for control of their associated radiance patterns. The display is connected for response to the set of N&times;K display-excitation electrical-input signals. In this manner, the display provides a multiviewpoint and autostereoscopic three-dimensional image associated with the original three-dimensional scene. An alternative embodiment of the invention is utilized to provide efficient storage and display of 3D computer graphics images.
