Systems and method are directed to launching an application from a rail located within a user interface of a personal information manager application. More specifically, a display of a first user interface of a first application may be rendered at a display device, where the first user interface includes a rail populated with a plurality of icons representing a plurality of applications. At least one of the plurality of icons may be selected and a second application may be determined based on the selected icon. Based upon the selection of the icon, a display of a second user interface may be rendered within a portion of the first user interface.

Life events relating to a user are displayed on a calendar. A user may navigate to different time periods in the calendar and see past life events relating to the user displayed on the calendar. The life events that are displayed on the calendar may include different types of content and be determined from different sources. For example, the life events for the time period may be: pictures, events, social media posts, messages, and the like. Different content sources may be used to locate the life events relating to the user. The life events that are selected for display on the calendar may be shown differently from other content that is included on the calendar. The life events may be processed to adjust an appearance of the life event before it is displayed. A user may also share a life experience with other users.

Embodiments provide electronic calendar application features and functionality that includes a free form calendar input surface, but the embodiments are not so limited. In an embodiment, a computer-based method can be configured to provide electronic calendar features including a free form calendar surface that enables users to personalize the calendar surface using a variety of input types and methods. Other embodiments are included.

Embodiments provide functionality to provide electronic calendar features and functionalities including personal note-taking features on calendar items, but the embodiments are not so limited. In an embodiment, a computer-based method can be configured to provide a personal note-taking space that enables users to take personal notes on appointment or meeting items with or without sharing the personal notes. Other embodiments are included.

Content is created and is made consumable by a user. A Property associated with the user is accessed to determine whether the user is to receive accessibility content. If so, accessibility content alert processing is performed on the content.

Accessibility processing when making content available to others

A calendar view smoothly and progressively transitions between different calendar views. Instead of snapping to a week view in response to changing from a month view to the week view, the month view progressively transitions to the week view while receiving an interaction. For example, the week view may smoothly expand while the view of the other weeks in the month smoothly decrease in size while the interaction is being received. A user may navigate between different calendar views such as year to month, month to week, week to multiple days, days to single days, and the like. When navigating month to month, week to week, day to day, and the like, the transitions between each time element are progressively and smoothly transitioned. Task information or other information that is displayed in the calendar progressively transitions to show more or less information depending on the interaction being received.

Navigating a calendar

A user creates appointments by selecting dates on a displayed calendar. A pattern may be automatically detected in response to the user selecting calendar dates on the calendar. For example, a pattern may automatically be detected when a user selects two Mondays in a row when selecting appointment dates. In response to automatically detecting a pattern, a list of recurring appointments is automatically created. The automatically created appointments may be shown on the calendar. The automatically created appointments may also be shown in a list of an appointment user interface. A user may interact with the appointments in the appointment user interface. For example, a user may select one of the displayed appointments from the list and change appointment information related to the selected appointment. A start date and an end date may also be specified using the appointment user interface.

Enhanced telephony computer user interfaces seamlessly integrate and leverage the features of personal computers and telephones. The manner in which media is presented at a computing system can also be modified automatically in response to detected telephone operations. These modifications can include pausing media in response to a detected telephone call and/or adjusting a volume of the media presentation. The media presentation/volume can also be resumed/restored upon detecting that the telephone call has terminated.

The system and method of the present invention provides a user interface for providing peripheral awareness of information to a user. The information to be provided is either determined automatically, or specified by the user. Once the information to be provided is determined or specified, it is automatically tracked or watched via at least one conventional communications interface. Current information is then automatically dynamically provided in an interactive peripheral display which minimizes any potential distraction to the user. Determining or specifying, tracking or watching, and providing the information is accomplished using at least one customizable dynamic encapsulated object, a 'ticket,' that when paired with a 'viewer,' provides peripheral awareness of information to the user. Further, in one embodiment, the tickets are sharable among users, and may be copied, cut, pasted, saved, transmitted, dragged and dropped from web pages, etc., like any other electronic file using conventional techniques.

An enhanced telephony (ET) computer user interface that seamlessly integrates features of a personal computer (PC) and a telephone into a coherent user interface. The user is provided with a rich variety of functionality that leverages the fact that the PC has considerably more processing power and greater access to variety of data than the ordinary telephone. This processing power and data access is used to the user's advantage as the telephone's capabilities and functionality are greatly expanded. In general, the ET user interface includes a plurality of environments for the user to choose. These environments include a My Contacts environment, a communication preferences environment, and a Call History environment. Each of these environments contains certain available processes and features for controlling and managing telephones.

A call forwarding system forwards telephone calls based on presence information of a user as reported by computing devices associated with a telephone number. When a telephone system receives an incoming call directed to one of the telephone numbers of the user's computing devices, it sends an incoming call event to each computing device. Upon receiving the incoming call event from a telephone system, each computing device determines whether the user is most likely present at that computing device based on the presence information. When a computing device determines that the user is most likely present at that computing device, it sends a notification to the telephone system to forward the incoming call to the telephone number associated with that computing device to effect the automatic forwarding of a call based on presence information.
