The present disclosure relates to adhesive compositions made from the reaction product of plant protein and phenolics, and method of making and using the adhesive compositions. A maximum bonding strength of 7.8±1.5 MPa was obtained using only 1 weight % tannic acid in a zein matrix of pH=7 and cured in 120° C.

Adhesive compositions made from plant protein and phenolics

This invention relates to protein-based adhesives that are capable to adhere to a substrate in a dry, wet, moist, or an aqueous environment. Particularly, said adhesives comprise a crosslinking agent and an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) that contain tyrosine, lysine, cysteine, dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) or trihydroxyphenylalanine (TOPA) amino acid residue, or a combination thereof, on the polypeptide chain of said ELP. Among others, the adhesives disclosed herein may find broad applications in medical treatments and surgical operations. Compositions and methods of use are within the scope of this application.

Protein-based adhesive and its modification

This invention relates to a method for manufacturing a catechol-containing co-polymer through a suspension polymerization or a solution polymerization process. In some illustrative embodiments, this disclosure relates to a process of a free radical suspension polymerization for large-scale manufacturing catechol-containing copolymers. In some other illustrative embodiments, this disclosure relates to a solution polymerization of free radical, cationic, or anionic process for large-scale manufacturing catechol-containing copolymers. The process and the product thereof are within the scope of this disclosure.

Large scale production of catechol-containing polymers

The invention relates to biomimetic adhesive compositions emulating mussel adhesive proteins, wherein multiple chains of a copolymer are interlinked via specific hydrogen bonds and/or ligand-metal-ligand bonds, which serve as sacrificial breakable bonds upon mechanical stress and thereby effectively dissipate the mechanical energy. Accordingly, toughened adhesive compositions with improved ductility and strength may be obtained.

Embodiments of this invention relate to adhesives, and more particularly to biomimetic heteropolymer adhesive compositions. Certain embodiments relate to biomimetic terpolymer adhesive compositions including dopamine methacrylamide, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, or 3,4-dihydroxystyrene, mimicking moieties found in marine mussel adhesive proteins. In some embodiments, elastic moduli of the adhesives are preferably selected to match the elastic moduli of the substrates to minimize stress concentrations, to increase the ductility of the adhesive-substrate system, or both.

Adhesives and methods of making the same

Provided are adhesive compositions comprising copolymers having biomimetic cross-linkable monomers derived from mussel adhesive proteins. Also provided are methods of curing the adhesive compositions, methods of manufacturing the adhesive compositions, and devices comprising the adhesive compositions.

Embodiments of this invention relate to methods of adhering in an aqueous environment. More specifically, embodiments of this invention relate to use of a copolymer mimics of mussel adhesive proteins as a high-strength adhesive in aqueous environments.

Methods of adhering in an aqueous environment

Embodiments of this invention relate to adhesives, and more particularly to biomimetic heteropolymer adhesive compositions. Certain embodiments relate to biomimetic terpolymer adhesive compositions including dopamine methacrylamide, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, or 3,4-dihydroxy styrene, mimicking moieties found in marine mussel adhesive proteins. In some embodiments, elastic moduli of the adhesives are preferably selected to match the elastic moduli of the substrates to minimize stress concentrations, to increase the ductility of the adhesive-substrate system, or both.

Protein-based adhesives. In one embodiment of the present disclosure, an elastin-like polypeptide has a sequence LDGTL-(PGXGVPGKGVPGXGVPGXGVPGXGVPGXGV)-PVADRGMRLE, wherein each Xis selected from the group consisting of tyrosine (Y), dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), and 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenylalanine (TOPA), wherein each Xis selected from the group consisting of valine (V), Y, DOPA, and TOPA, wherein each Xis selected from the group consisting of glutamic acid (E) and lysine (K), and wherein n is at or between 6 and 10 or higher or lower.

Protein-based adhesives

Poly[(3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid)-co-(lactic acid)] can be produced from renewable feedstocks, possesses tunable degradation, and can achieve adhesion strengths rivaling the performance of existing glues and adhesives. In one aspect, a polymer is presented. The polymer includes poly[(3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid)-co-(lactic acid)]. The polymer can be an adhesive. The adhesive is configured to have tunable degradation. The polymer is derived from renewable resources. The renewable resources can include any one of or a combination of starch, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, chitin, polyphenols, poly (isoprene), suberin, polyterpenes, polyterpenoids, polyhydroxyalkanoates, rosin-based polymers, triglyceride-based polymers, alginates, and/or proteins.

Adhesives from renewable feedstocks

The disclosure described herein includes antifouling compositions, methods of antifouling by adhesion suppression and methods of selecting an antifouling composition which suppresses marine animal adhesion or reduces the strength of marine animal adhesion by reducing or quenching the oxidative adhesion chemistry of the marine animal.
