A rotary wing aircraft includes an airframe, a stationary mast fixedly engaged to the airframe and extending along a first axis, and an electric motor. The electric motor includes a stator assembly engaged to the mast and a rotor assembly disposed radially outward from the stator assembly and configured to rotate with respect to the stator assembly. A plurality of rotor blades project radially outward from the rotor assembly.

Electric propulsion system for a rotary wing aircraft

The disclosure herein relates to power leveling mechanisms comprising a high frequency controller. The power leveling mechanism receives a power demand signal indicating a power requirement of a vehicle and determines a high frequency component of the power demand signal. The power leveling mechanism also provides a signal to a primary propulsion system and provides, via the high frequency controller, a high bandwidth signal based on the high frequency component to an auxiliary propulsion system.

A rotor drive system includes a mast defining a rotation axis, an electric motor with a stator portion fixed to the stationary mast, a rotor portion rotatably relative to the stator portion, and a clutch disposed along the rotation axis and connected to the rotor portion of the electric motor. A rotor assembly is rotatable about the rotation axis and operably connected to clutch such that, when rotational speed of the rotor assembly exceeds rotational speed of the rotor portion of the electric motor, the clutch disengages the rotor assembly from the electric motor rotor portion.

Method of controlling an electric propulsion system

An electrically powered of the vertical takeoff and landing aircraft configured for use with a tether station having a continuous power source is provided including at least one rotor system. The vertical takeoff and landing aircraft additionally has an autonomous flight control system coupled to the continuous power source. The autonomous flight control system is configured to operate an electrical motor coupled to the at least one rotor system such that the vertical takeoff and landing aircraft continuously hovers above the tether station in a relative position. The vertical takeoff and landing aircraft also includes a detection system for detecting objects at a distance from the vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
