Methods of treating contaminated groundwater having recalcitrant organic contaminants are disclosed. The methods include pretreating the contaminated groundwater to remove iron, introducing a persulfate to the contaminated groundwater, and exposing the contaminated groundwater to irradiation. The methods may also include extracting the contaminated groundwater from a feed stream. The methods may also include preparing the persulfate with high purity water. Systems for treating contaminated groundwater having recalcitrant organic contaminants are also disclosed. The systems include a pretreatment subsystem, a source of persulfate, and an irradiation source.

Advanced oxidation process for ex-situ groundwater remediation

According to various aspects and embodiments, a system and method for treating groundwater contaminated with an organic contaminant is provided. According to some embodiments, the contaminated groundwater is treated by introducing a persulfate to produce a first treated aqueous solution, exposing the first treated aqueous solution to ultraviolet light to produce a second treated aqueous solution and one or more gases, and removing the one or more gases generated from exposing the first treated aqueous solution to the ultraviolet light.

According to various aspects and embodiments, a system and method for treated contaminated groundwater is provided. The groundwater is contaminated with an initial concentration of recalcitrant organic contaminant. According to some embodiments, the contaminated groundwater is treated by introducing a persulfate to produce a first treated aqueous solution and then exposing the first treated aqueous solution to ultraviolet light to produce a second treated aqueous solution. The second treated aqueous solution may have a concentration of the recalcitrant organic contaminant that is at least 50% less than the initial concentration of recalcitrant organic contaminant.

The present invention generally relates to a water treatment system and a sanitization system and method. A sanitization fluid, typically water at a pharmaceutically acceptable temperature, is intermittently provided to the water treatment system for minimal periods of time.

A method and system for providing Water for Injection using reverse osmosis. Water for Injection can be produced by reverse osmosis and the reverse osmosis membrane can be kept in a constantly self-sanitizing condition. One way of obtaining a constantly self-sanitizing condition is to maintain the reverse osmosis membrane at an elevated temperature during production of Water for Injection.

The present invention generally relates to purification systems, and to sanitization and/or sealing of the purification system. The purification system includes an electrodeionization device which can comprise one or a plurality of stages. The electrodeionization device can be constructed with a resilient sealing member forming a water-tight seal between rigid thermally and dimensionally stable compartment spacers. The construction of the electrodeionization device may allow cycling of hot water and/or other liquids, which, in some cases, can improve efficiency and performance of the electrodeionization device. Moreover, the cycling of hot water and/or other liquids may be used to sanitize the electrodeionization device to at least a pharmaceutically acceptable condition and, preferably, in certain instances, to meet at least minimum requirements according to U.S. Pharmacopoeia guidelines by inactivating any microorganisms present within the electrodeionization device.

Electrodeionization device and methods of use

A water treatment system and process for removing weakly ionized and/or organic materials from the water by intra-system pH adjustment. An exemplary embodiment of the system includes an inlet through which a feedstream passes into a first chemical treating unit wherein the pH of the feedstream is maintained below about 7 to substantially reduce a concentration of weakly basic components in the water by chemical conversion to a more ionized state. A first water treatment unit is positioned downstream of the first chemical treating unit to substantially remove ionized components in the stream, and produce a first product stream. In various embodiments, the first water treatment unit can be selected from the group consisting of a media filter unit, a water softener unit, a dechlorination unit, and combinations thereof. The first product stream is treated downstream of the first water treatment unit in a second chemical treating unit to maintain the pH of the first product stream above about 7 to substantially reduce a concentration of weakly acidic components in the water by chemical conversion to a more ionized state. A second water treatment unit is positioned downstream of the second chemical treating unit to substantially remove the ionized components, and produce a second product stream, which exits the system through a purified water outlet positioned downstream of the second water treatment unit.

An apparatus and process for removing strong oxidizing agents from liquids. An exemplary embodiment of the apparatus includes an inlet for receiving an input stream having a first concentration of a strong oxidizing agent. The input stream flows into an irradiation unit in fluid communication with the inlet. While resident in the irradiation unit, the input stream is irradiated with UV radiation to substantially reduce the first concentration, thereby forming a first product stream having a second concentration of the strong oxidizing agent. The first product stream then passes through a treatment unit in fluid communication with and positioned downstream of the irradiation unit where the second concentration is substantially reduced, thereby forming a second product stream having a third concentration of the strong oxidizing agent. The treatment unit is selected from the group consisting of a softener unit, a reaction vessel containing a bed of metal redox media, and combinations thereof. The second product stream exits the apparatus through an outlet and passes to a point of use.
