A displacement-generating battery cell for driving a drug-delivery device is described. The cell may include at least one volume-changing element. The cell may include a housing formed according to a concertina-shaped design with folds in the walls thereof and may contain an internal chemical reaction system. The chemical reaction system may include an electrode. The electrode may be the volume-changing element. The arrangement of said chemical reaction system may be such that an expansion of the volume-changing element in a direction lengthens the cell and thus reduces the extent of the folds. Drug-delivery devices including the displacement-generating battery cell are also described.

Drug delivery device with electrically controlled volume changing means

A drug-delivery device comprising a drug-reservoir assembly, displacement-generating actuator, and drug administration unit is described, wherein the drug-reservoir assembly comprises at least one flexible wall and a constraining ring, such that the displacement generated by the actuator collapses a flexible wall of the assembly expelling the drug contents of the drug-reservoir towards said drug administration means.

Size-efficient drug-delivery device

The present application provides a self-powered drug-delivery device. The device includes a chamber having a wall. The chamber contains a fluid and is in connection with an administration means. The device also includes a displacement-generating battery cell. The device further includes an electrically-controlled battery unit, which includes the displacement-generating battery cell coupled to the chamber by a coupling means. The displacement-generating battery cell includes an element that changes shape as a result of charge or discharge of the battery cell so as to cause a displacement within the battery unit. The arrangement of the battery unit, the coupling means, the wall, the chamber, and the administration means is such that the displacement derived from the battery unit is conveyed by the coupling means to cause displacement of the wall of the chamber such that the fluid is expelled from the chamber to force a drug towards the administration means.

Drug delivery device

An egg sealing unit for an automated biological sample collection system and method of use. The egg sealing unit seals the section of egg from which the shell has been removed. The egg sealing unit includes a sampler, an applicator and an imaging adaptor providing an optical conduit between the surface of an egg and the CAM. The applicator is configured to deliver exogenous material to the CAM, the sampler is configured to collect samples from the CAM and the imaging adaptor allows the CAM to be monitored.

Automated biological sample collection system and methods

Embodiments of the present invention provide drug-delivery devices comprising a drug reservoir chamber containing a substance to be delivered, in fluid connection with a drug administration means, and at least one displacement-generating battery cell coupled to said drug reservoir chamber by a coupling means, the at least one displacement-generating battery cell comprising an element that changes shape as a result of discharge of the battery cell so as to cause a displacement within the battery unit, the arrangement being such that the displacement derived from said battery unit is conveyed by said coupling means to cause displacement of at least a portion of a wall of said drug reservoir chamber reducing the volume of said drug reservoir chamber such that said substance is expelled from said drug reservoir chamber towards said drug administration means upon discharge, thereby being a self-powered drug delivery device.

An automated biological sample collection system and methods are disclosed. The system comprises an incubator, an applicator and a sampler. The incubator is configured to control the environment of a plurality of eggs, the applicator is configured to deliver exogenous material to the plurality of eggs, at least one sampler is configured to collect samples from the plurality of eggs, invasively or non-invasively and a system controller is operable to drive the various components of the system automatically according to assay specifications and configuration.

Embodiments include a displacement-generating battery cell for driving a drug-delivery device. The cell includes at least one volume-changing element. The cell also includes a housing formed according to a concertina-shaped design with folds in the walls thereof and containing an internal chemical reaction system. The arrangement of the chemical reaction system is such that as the cell is discharged, the volume-changing element expands, thereby lengthening the battery and thus reducing the extent of said folds, such that the cell becomes taller to reflect the expansion of the volume-changing component.

The invention provides a water-activated, deferred-action battery having a housing containing at least one cell, comprising at least one anode selected from the group consisting of magnesium, aluminum, zinc and alloys thereof; a cathode comprising a skeletal frame including conductive metal and having a portion of its surface area formed as open spaces, and further comprising a heat-pressed, rigid static bed of active cathode material encompassing the skeletal frame, the cathode material comprising basic copper sulfate, said cathode material being compacted and fused to itself and to the skeletal frame under pressure and / or heat, to form a heat-fused, conductive, electrochemically active phase; at least one cavity separating the cathode and the at least one anode, and at least one aperture leading to the at least one cavity for the ingress of an electrolyte-forming, aqueous liquid.

Water activated battery

A photovoltaic cell including: (a) a housing adapted to enclose the photovoltaic cell, and including an at least partially transparent cell wall; (b) an electrolyte, disposed within the cell wall, and containing a corrosive redox species; (c) an at least partially transparent conductive coating disposed on an interior surface of the cell wall, within the photovoltaic cell; (d) an anode disposed on the conductive coating, the anode including a porous film adapted to make intimate contact with the redox species, and a dye, absorbed on a surface of the porous film, the dye and the film adapted to convert photons to electrons; (e) a cathode, disposed within an interior surface of the housing and disposed substantially opposite the anode, including a conductive carbon layer, and a catalytic component, associated with the carbon layer and adapted to catalyze a redox reaction, the carbon layer adapted to transfer electrons from the catalytic component to a current collection component of the cathode, and (f) at least one metal strip or wire, electrically associated with the anode and with the conductive coating, the strip or wire having sufficient thickness to form a protrusion protruding above a plane of the porous film by at least 50 micrometers, wherein a distance between a surface of the catalytic component and a surface of the porous film is less than 20 micrometers.
