The method includes (a) determining an outdoor coil temperature of an outdoor heat exchanger and a speed of a compressor of a heat pump system, (b) determining a target indoor coil temperature of the indoor coil based on the outdoor coil temperature and the speed of the compressor, and (c) adjusting a speed of air flowing across the indoor coil based on a difference between a current indoor coil temperature and the target indoor coil temperature to reduce the difference between the current indoor coil temperature and the target indoor coil temperature.

Systems and methods for indoor air temperature control for heat pump systems

Methods and related systems for controlling indoor relative humidity include (a) determining a target dew point temperature based on desired indoor conditions for the indoor space, and (b) determining an initial dew point temperature based on an initial set of current indoor conditions of the indoor space. Some embodiments include a method for detecting a switch over valve fault where the heat pump includes a refrigerant cycle, a compressor, a metering device, a first heat exchanger, an second heat exchanger, a temperature sensor, and a switch over valve, and where the method includes operating the HVAC system in one either a heating mode or a cooling mode, monitoring a refrigerant temperature associated with the refrigerant cycle using the temperature sensor, monitoring an outdoor ambient air temperature, determining a temperature difference between the refrigerant temperature and the outdoor ambient temperature, determining whether the temperature difference is greater than a predetermined temperature difference threshold, and declaring a switch over valve fault when the temperature difference is greater than the predetermined temperature difference threshold.

Methods and related systems of detecting a fault in a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system are disclosed. In an embodiment, the method includes determining an expected runtime of the HVAC system required to achieve a temperature setpoint in a comfort zone of the HVAC system following a triggering event, wherein the expected runtime is based on a design temperature of a geographic location at which the HVAC system is installed. Additionally, the method includes monitoring a current runtime of the HVAC system elapsed following the triggering event, and comparing the expected runtime with the current runtime of the HVAC system elapsed following the triggering event.

Systems and methods for detecting a fault in a climate control system

A two temperature electronic expansion valve control for variable speed compressors that utilizes a correlation between airflow percentage and heat exchanger pressure drop to control the operation of an expansion valve. An indoor airflow percentage request may be communicated from an outdoor controller to an air handler controller. Using a correlation between airflow percentage and pressure drop across the heat exchanger, the airflow percentage may be used in predicting an outlet pressure of refrigerant exhausted from the heat exchanger. The predicted pressure drop may be used in determining a saturated temperature for the exhausted refrigerant. The determined saturated temperature may be compared to a sensed temperature of the refrigerant at the outlet of the heat exchanger to determine a superheat value, which is compared to a reference superheat value in determining the degree to open or close the expansion valve.
