A curable resin composition contains a curable resin that comprises at least one non-aromatic epoxy compound, at least one non-aromatic oxetane compound, or a mixture thereof, one or more curing agents selected from Lewis acid:Lewis base complexes, and a cure accelerating amount of one or more anhydride compounds. A method accelerating the cure of a curable resin composition, comprising adding a cure accelerating amount of one or more anhydride compounds to a curable resin composition comprising a curable resin that comprises at least one non-aromatic epoxy compound or non-aromatic oxetane compound and a curing agent that comprises one or more Lewis acid-base complexes. The composition and method are useful in making fiber reinforced resin matrix composite articles.

The present invention is directed to a method for making a di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound that includes the steps of: (a) reacting a fluorenone compound according structure (I) with excess aminobenzene according to structure (II) wherein: each R, R, R, R, R, and Ris independently a group that is inert in the polymerization of epoxy compounds, and Ris H or (C-C)alkyl, in the presence of an acid catalyst, in a liquid medium comprising an aromatic or substituted aromatic solvent having a boiling point of greater than or equal to 150&#xb0; C. and in the presence of an acid catalyst, in a liquid medium comprising an aromatic or substituted aromatic solvent having a boiling point of greater than or equal to 150&#xb0; C. and from which the di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound is crystallizable, to form a crude product mixture comprising the di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound, (b) crystallizing di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound in the product mixture, and (c) separating the product mixture into crystallized di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound and a filtrate.

Method for making a di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound

A multifunctional surfacing material capable of providing lightning strike protection (LSP) and burn-through resistance. In one embodiment, the multifunctional surfacing material is composed of a conductive layer positioned between two resin layers, at least one of which contains one or more fire retardant compounds. In another embodiment, the multifunctional surfacing material is composed of a conductive layer positioned between two resin layers one of which is a thermally-stable layer. The surfacing material is co-curable with a composite substrate, e.g. prepreg or prepreg layup, which contains fiber-reinforced matrix resin.

Resin infusion process for manufacturing fiber-reinforced composites

Curable epoxy resin compositions suitable for liquid resin infusion processes. In one embodiment, the resin composition contains (a) at least two polyepoxides, one of which is triglycidyl ether of tris(hydroxyphenyl)methane, (b) an aromatic amine curing agent, and (c) core-shell rubber particles. In another embodiment, the resin composition (a) at least two polyepoxides, one of which is diglycidyl ether of bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, (b) an aromatic amine curing agent, and (c) core-shell rubber particles.

Resin compositions and resin infusion process

A manufacturing process, which includes: (i) preparing a preform; (ii) laying the preform within a mold; (iii) heating the mold to a predetermined temperature; and (iv) injecting a modified resin system, wherein the modified resin system is formulated to have a viscosity below a threshold viscosity at a specific temperature and a high level of toughness. In one embodiment, the modified resin system contains a combination of epoxies, a curing agent, core-shell rubber particles, a thermoplastic material in an amount of less than 7% by weight, wherein in a cured condition, the thermoplastic material is separated into aggregate domains from the base resin, each aggregate domain having an island-like morphology.

Disclosed herein is a method for utilizing the exothermic energy generated by a low temperature cure reaction to access a high-temperature cure reaction, which is otherwise energetically inaccessible at a chosen tool temperature, thereby producing a cured resin matrix with properties closely matching to those produced via high-temperature cure reactions but achieved via a short cure time and low cure temperature. Also disclosed is a short-cure resin composition containing: (a) at least one multifunctional epoxy resin having an epoxy functionality of greater than 1; (b) a hardener composition containing (i) at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amine curing agent having one or more amino groups per molecule; (ii) at least one aromatic amine curing agent having one or more amino groups per molecule; and optionally, (iii) an imidazole as curing accelerator. The improved properties of this resin composition include being curable at a temperature of &#x2266;120&#xb0; C. for a time period of less than 10 minutes to achieve a degree of cure higher than that derived from the same composition with just (i) aliphatic/cycloaliphatic amine or (ii) aromatic amine in isolation.
