A method is provided which treats or prevents gum disease involving applying to the gums an agent for maintaining or improving the permeability barrier of the gum.

Method for the prevention of gum disease

The present invention relates to a process for treating a mixture of a liquid oil and a copper chlorophyll extract with a mixture of at least 90% by weight of a C,-C,alcohol, and water at a certain concentration. The thus treated mixture is then suitable for making micro capsules with a green colorer liquid core material comprising said mixture by means of complex coaceration. These microcapsules can be included in oral care products to import a speckled appearance thereto. The liquid oil is typically sunflower oil or paraffin oil, and the C,-C,alcohol is typically ethanol or isopropanol.

Encapsulation

The invention relates to an oral care composition with antiplaque agents. The antiplaque agents are complexes of divalent copper, zinc, iron or tin, or trivalent iron with a specific class of cyclic &agr;-hydroxyketones. A typical example is the copper (II)-ethylmaltol complex. These complexes are more active antiplaque agents that e.g. copper-hinokitiol complexes.

Oral care compositions

An oral care composition comprises capsules which comprise an encapsulated gent encapsulated by an encapsulating material stable in the presence of anionic surfactants, said encapsulated agent being capable of providing a cosmetic, sensory, protective or therapeutic benefit to the oral cavity, wherein the capsules' weight average particle size ranges from 100 to 2000 .mu.m and wherein the capsules are capable of being gradually crushed during brushing thereby releasing the encapsulated agent gradually during brushing, the foaming capability being maintained throughout brushing.

Oral composition

Packaged toothpaste formulations which contain air sensitive components, e.g. vitamin C, are prevented from discoloring or otherwise degrading, by placing adjacent to an area of the packaging which may allow air access to the formulation, e.g. an air permeable collar, a nozzle, or the wall of an air permeable tube, a body (e.g. plug or layer) of material which does not contain any air sensitive components. Preferably, the latter body of material is the packaged toothpaste but without the air sensitive components.
