A method of making a trihalosilane comprising contacting an organotrihalosilane according to the formula RS1X3 (I), wherein R is C-Chydrocarbyl and each X independently is halo, with hydrogen, wherein the mole ratio of the organotrihalosilane to hydrogen is from 0.009:1 to 1:2300, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal selected from (i) Re, (ii) a mixture comprising Re and at least one element selected from Pd, Ru, Mn, Cu, and Rh, (iii) a mixture comprising Ir and at least one element selected from Pd and Rh, (iv) Mn, (v) a mixture comprising Mn and Rh, (vi) Ag, (vii) Mg, and (viii) Rh at from 300 to 800&#xb0; C. to form a trihalosilane.

Method of making a trihalosilane

A method of preparing organohalosilanes comprising combining an organohalide having the formula RX (I), wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and X is fluoro, chloro, bromo, or iodo, with a contact mass comprising at least 2% (w/w) of a palladium suicide of the formula PdSi(II), wherein x is an integer from 1 to 5 and y is 1 to 8, or a platinum suicide of formula PtSi (III), wherein z is 1 or 2, in a reactor at a temperature from 250 to 700&#xb0; C. to form an organohalosilane.

Method of preparing an organohalosilane

The invention pertains to a process for the preparation of organohalosilanes. The process comprises contacting a first finely-divided silicon comprising from 0.08 to 0.25% (w/w) of aluminum with an organohalide in a reactor at a temperature of from 250 to 350&#xb0; C. in the presence of a Direct Process catalyst comprising copper, and a promotor; and introducing a second finely-divided silicon into the reactor comprising from 0.001 to &#x3c;0.10% (w/w) of aluminum into the reactor as needed in an amount sufficient to maintain an aluminum concentration of from 0.08 to 0.2% (w/w), based on a weight of unreacted silicon and aluminum.

Method of making organohalosilanes

A process for preparing organohalosilanes comprising combining hydrogen, a halosilane having the formula HSiX(I) and an organohalide having the formula RX (II), wherein R is C-Calkyl or C-Ccycloalkyl, each X is independently halo, and the subscript a is 0, 1, or 2, in the presence of a sufficient amount of a catalyst effective in enabling the replacement of one or more of the halo groups of the halosilane with the R group from the organohalide, at a temperature from 200 to 800&#xb0; C., to form an organohalosilane and a hydrogen halide, wherein the volumetric ratio of hydrogen to halosilane is from 1:3 to 1:0.001 and the volumetric ratio of hydrogen to organohalide is from 1:1 to 1:0.001, and wherein the catalyst is optionally treated with the hydrogen or the halosilane prior to the combining.

Preparation of organohalosilanes

A method of preparing a diorganodihalosilane, the method comprising the following separate and consecutive steps: (i) treating a preformed metal silicide with a mixture comprising hydrogen gas and a silicon tetrahalide at a temperature from 300 to 1400&#xb0; C. to form a treated metal silicide, wherein the preformed metal silicide comprises a metal selected from at least one of Ni, Pd, or Pt; and (ii) reacting the treated metal silicide with an organohalide according to the formula RX at a temperature from 250 to 700&#xb0; C. to form a diorganodihalosilane, wherein R is C-Chydrocarbyl and X is halo.

A method of making a diorganodihalosilane contacting an organotrihalosilane according to the formula RSiX(I) with hydrogen in the presence of a metal catalyst comprising at least two metals and at a temperature from 300 to 800&#xb0; C. to form a diorganodihalosilane, wherein R is C-CQ hydrocarbyl, X is halo, and two of the at least two metals are chosen from at least one of (i) copper and palladium, (ii) copper and gold, (iii) indium and iridium or (iv) iridium and rhenium.

Method of making a diorganodihalosilane

The invention also pertains to a method of producing organohalohydrosilanes by contacting an organohalide and hydrogen gas with a combination of a silicon metal, a catalyst, a promoter and a hydrogenation catalyst. The invention also pertains to a method of producing organohalohydrosilanes by contacting an organohalide and hydrogen gas with a reaction mass residue and optionally a hydrogenation catalyst.

Process for producing organohalohydrosilanes

Crude chlorosilane streams containing lower-boiling chlorosilanes and higher-boiling chlorosilanes are separated by contacting them with a distillation aid. The lower-boiling chlorosilanes are separated from the crude chlorosilane stream, and then the distillation aid and the higher-boiling chlorosilanes are separated from one another. The distillation aid is a mono-cyano-substituted organic compound, a nitro-substituted organic compound, a mono-cyano-substituted organosilicon compound, a nitro-substituted organosilicon compound, or a mixture thereof. These distillation aids increase the relative volatility of crude chlorosilane streams such as methyltrichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane resulting in improved separation at lower capital and/or fixed costs.

Separation of chlorosilanes

Hydraulic cement is made by a process in which (i) raw materials are crushed and ground, (ii) the crushed and ground raw materials and other components are burned and calcined to prepare a cement clinker, and (iii) the cement clinker is ground to a fine powder. A grinding aid is added to the cement clinker before it is ground in (iii). The grinding aid is an uncalcined direct process residue gel, which is an hydrolysis product of alkylhalodisilanes produced as by-products in the manufacture of alkylhalosilanes.

Process for making cements with silicon containing grinding aids

A method and apparatus for exposing particles to a fluid including the steps of adding fluid and particles to a container having impeller means therein, generating a current with the impeller so as to subject the particles to centrifugal and convective forces resulting in the formation of a well-defined and localized fluidized bed of particles, and maintaining the existence of the current through the fluidized bed so that the particles are thereby exposed to the fluid. The fluidized bed is located in a region removed from the impeller when the particles are more dense than the fluid, and the fluidized bed is located in a region near the impeller when the particles are less dense than the fluid. A method of exposing a first fluid to a second fluid, the second fluid being either a gas or a liquid immiscible in the first fluid is also disclosed. The method includes the steps of adding the first and second fluids to a container having impeller means therein, generating with the impeller a current in the first fluid which subjects the second fluid to centrifugal and convective forces resulting in the formation of a well defined and localized bed of a dispersed phase of the second fluid remaining in a region near the impeller, and maintaining the existence of the current through the region so that the dispersed phase in the fluidized bed is exposed to the first fluid.
