A novel fatty acid ester having the general formula R&#x2014;COORwherein Rand Rare hydrocarbon groups derived from a branched fatty acid and an alcohol, respectively. Ris derived from a branched fatty acid which has been refined from a commercially available acid to give a product with a high concentration of monobranched fatty acids and a low concentration of polybranched fatty acids. The use of the ester derived from the refined fatty acid is found to be particularly useful in personal care compositions, for example as an emollient.

A novel, branched, saturated, primary fatty acid amide is disclosed. Application areas are as a slip and/or antiblocking agent or mold release agent. The branched, saturated, primary fatty acid has a formula R&#x2014;CO&#x2014;NHwhere R is a saturated, branched hydrocarbon chain having 11 to 23 carbon atoms, wherein at least 60% by weight of the R&#x2014;CO&#x2014;NHmolecules have monoalkyl branches and less than 25% by weight of the R&#x2014;CO&#x2014;NHmolecules have polyalkyl branches.
