An air channeling sub-system includes a mechanical cooling section and a direct evaporative cooling section. The direct evaporative cooling section is located downstream from the mechanical cooling section. Cooling air is channeled through the air channeling sub-system and into a room that receives supply air from the air channeling sub-system. If a first set of control conditions is met, the air channeling sub-systems is operated in an economizer mode. The economizer mode includes controlling an amount of return air that is blended with outside air and channeling the blended air through the direct evaporative cooling section to evaporate water into the blended air to control humidity. If a second set of control conditions is met, the air channeling sub-system is operated in a free cooling mode. The free cooling mode includes channeling cooling air to the room while the mechanical cooling section and direct evaporative cooling section are shutdown or inhibited from operation.

Multi-mode cooling system and method with evaporative cooling

A system for cooling a power distribution unit in a room of a data center includes an air handling system that supplies air to the room or removes air from the room through an opening in the room and an air directing device. The first end of the air directing device couples at the opening in the room. The second end of the air directing device couples with the power distribution unit at one or more openings of an enclosure of the power distribution unit. The air directing device directs air between the opening in the room and the one or more openings of the power distribution unit.

Reconfiguring a power system for an electrical load includes establishing a secondary feed to an electrical load that is receiving power from a primary power source. A set of secondary feed lines is coupled between a donor power source and a power input to the electrical load such that the set of secondary feed lines is configured to supply power from the donor power source to the electrical load. An automatic transfer switch is coupled in parallel with the set of secondary feed lines. The electrical load is transferred by the automatic transfer switch from the donor power source to the primary power source for the reconfiguration.

The adiabatic mode includes channeling cooling air through the direct evaporative cooling section to evaporate water into the cooling air. If a second set of control conditions is met, the air channeling sub-system is operated in a hybrid mode. The hybrid mode includes channeling cooling air through the mechanical cooling section to remove heat from the cooling air and channeling the cooling air through the direct evaporative cooling section to evaporate water into the cooling air.

A data center includes rack computing systems, electrical power system, and a circuit control device. The rack computing systems may include a rack and computing devices coupled to the rack. The electrical power system supplies power to computing devices in the racks. Each electrical power system may include overcurrent protection devices that protect computing devices in the rack computing systems from overcurrent conditions. The circuit control device is coupled to the overcurrent protection devices. The circuit control device can trigger the circuit protection devices to shed loads on the electrical power system from computing devices in the rack computing systems.

The hybrid mode includes channeling cooling air through the mechanical cooling section to remove heat from the cooling air and channeling the cooling air through the direct evaporative cooling section to evaporate water into the cooling air.

A system for cooling computer systems in a room of a data center includes a dehumidification system and an air channeling sub-system. The air channeling sub-system includes a mechanical cooling section that removes heat from the cooling air and an evaporative cooling section downstream from the mechanical cooling section. The dehumidification system may be upstream from the mechanical cooling section and the evaporative cooling section. A controller for the cooling system selectively operates the mechanical cooling section and the evaporative cooling section in an adiabatic mode if a first set of control conditions is met and in a hybrid mode if a second set of control conditions is met.
