An aircraft power system includes an auxiliary power unit (APU), a transmission unit, and a generator. The APU is configured to output a first APU rotational power in response to determining a first condition and a second APU rotational power in response to a determining a second condition. The transmission unit is configured to receive the first APU rotational output power from the APU. The transmission unit outputs a transmission rotational power based on the first APU rotational output power and outputs the transmission rotational power based on the second APU rotational output power. The generator receives the transmission rotational power and produces an alternating current (AC) voltage having a target frequency based on the transmission rotational power.

Multi-speed transmission to control variable APU speed and constant generator output frequency

A turbomachine dual spool transmission system can include a transmission assembly configured to connect to a combination output of a dual spool differential at a transmission input to be driven by the combination output to turn a transmission output. The transmission assembly can be configured to provide a first output gear ratio in a first state and a second output gear ratio in a second state. The system can include the dual spool differential. The dual spool differential can include a gear assembly configured to combine a low pressure spool input and a high pressure spool input into a combination output to provide an output speed range smaller than a low pressure speed range alone.

Turbomachine dual spool transmission systems

An aircraft power system includes an auxiliary power unit (APU), a generator, and a constant speed drive (CSD). The APU drives an APU drive shaft at a first rotational speed during a first condition and a second rotational speed during a second condition. The generator is rotatably coupled to a generator shaft and produces an AC voltage having a target frequency in response to rotation of the generator shaft at a target rotational speed. The CSD unit receives the first rotational speed from the APU drive shaft and rotates the generator shaft at the target rotational speed based on the first rotational speed. The CSD further receives the second rotational speed from the APU drive shaft and rotates the generator shaft at the target rotational speed based on the second rotational speed.

Constant speed drive to control variable APU speed and constant generator output frequency

A generator cooling assembly is provided and includes a rotor, a generator assembly and an air-cycle machine (ACM). The generator assembly includes a generator housing, a generator housed in the generator housing and a shaft coupled to the rotor to transmit shaft power from the rotor to the generator to drive the generator. The ACM is housed in the generator housing and is receptive of air. The air is cooled by the ACM and output from the ACM to the generator as fully cooled air to cool the generator.

A turbomachine dual spool differential can include a gear assembly configured to combine a low pressure spool input and a high pressure spool input into a combination output to provide an output speed range smaller than a low pressure spool speed range alone. The gear assembly can include a ring gear, a sun gear, and a plurality of planetary gears disposed between the sun gear and the ring gear and meshed with the sun gear and the ring gear. The planetary gears can be rotationally connected to a carrier.

A method of disconnecting a generator from a source of mechanical rotation includes receiving a generator disconnect command and receiving a rotational position of a generator input member. The input member rotational angle is compared to the target disconnect angle range, and a determination made whether to disconnect the input member from a generator drive member based on the comparison.

A generator arrangement includes a housing with a mounting feature, a main generator with an outboard shaft arranged within the housing and axially offset from the mounting feature along a rotation axis, and a permanent magnet generator. The permanent magnet generator has an inboard shaft arranged within the housing between the main generator and the mounting feature. The outboard shaft is coupled to the inboard shaft to provide rotation to the main generator through the permanent magnet generator. A turbomachine dual spool transmission system can include a direct drive assembly configured to selectively allow bypassing of a dual spool differential combination output to allow selective direct engagement of a low pressure spool to directly drive a rotational member or to be directly driven by the rotational member. The system can include the dual spool differential. The dual spool differential can include a gear assembly configured to combine a low pressure spool input and a high pressure spool input into a combination output to provide an output speed range smaller than a low pressure speed range alone.

A power extraction system is provided and includes a low-pressure spool of a gas turbine engine, the low-pressure spool being rotatable at an input rotational speed between a first minimum speed and a first maximum speed, downstream components rotatable at an output rotational speed between a second minimum speed and a second maximum speed and a transmission assembly by which rotations of the low-pressure spool at the input rotational speed are transmittable at the output rotational speed to the downstream components. The transmission assembly includes clutches and a controller configured to control openings and closings of the clutches according to an upshifting algorithm whereby a torque applied by the downstream components is used to reduce the output rotational speed to an output speed of a gear into which the transmission assembly is shifting.

A method of assembling an integrated drive generator includes the steps of providing a bore in a center housing portion, pressing a bearing liner into the bore, with a portion of the bearing liner extending proud of a surface of the center plate, and machining the surface around and adjacent to the bearing liner to provide a machined surface parallel to the surface.

A generator arrangement includes a stator with armature winding, a rotor with one or more permanent magnets supported for rotation relative to the stator, a variable speed drive, and a control module. The variable speed drive is connected to the rotor for rotating the rotor within a predetermined speed range. The control module is disposed in communication with the armature windings and is operatively connected to the variable speed drive to maintain constant output voltage as load changes by varying rotational speed of the rotor.

An aircraft main power generation system includes a rotor shaft, a main power generator a permanent magnet, an exciter, an aircraft power bus, and a generator control unit. The generator control unit is configured to provide a control current to the exciter in response to a speed of the main power generator reaching a threshold speed and electrically couple the main power generator to the aircraft power bus in response to the speed of the main power generator reaching a minimum operating speed, the threshold speed being lower than the minimum operating speed; or provide a control current to the exciter in response to the speed of the main power generator reaching a predetermined speed and electrically coupling the main power generator to the aircraft power bus in response to a time period elapsing after the speed of the main power generator has reached the predetermined speed.
