A method and apparatus for multipath switching using per-hop virtual local area network (VLAN) remapping is disclosed. In the method and apparatus, a data packet is forwarded for transmission over one of a first port and a second port. The device identifies a VLAN ID of the data packet as a second VLAN ID and changes the second VLAN ID to a first VLAN ID. Then one or more criteria of a classification set entry for forwarding the data packet over the second port are evaluated. The data packet is forwarded over the second port if the criteria are met and the data packet is associated with the second VLAN ID. Alternatively, the data packet is forwarded over the first port and is associated with the first VLAN ID if a dynamic entry specifies the data packet is to be forwarded over the first port.

Multipath switching using per-hop virtual local area network classification

A system and method suited for improved overall data transmission having a hardware-based transceiver configured for transmitting upstream data with suppressed data packets. In TCP sessions between devices, a server seeks an 'acknowledgement' that the downstream data transmission has been received by a client. Some data packets sent upstream may contain only TCP acknowledgement data and therefore may be combined with other purely TCP acknowledgement data packets in order to reduce the impact of the TCP acknowledgement packets on the overall upstream data throughput. In addition, this results in increased TCP performance in the downstream transmission direction as well because the algorithm enables replacing earlier arriving ACK packets with later arriving ACK packets which allows the device to send all TCP ACK information known to the suppressor at the earliest possible time.

System and method for efficient upstream transmission using suppression

Systems and method for partial encryption are disclosed. One example method comprises: creating a program association table to include a first program number which identifies a program encrypted in accordance with a first encryption scheme, and a second program number which identifies the same program encrypted in accordance with a second encryption scheme; and creating a program map table for the same program to include first audio and video identifiers associated with the first encryption scheme and second audio and video identifiers associated with the second encryption scheme.

Partial dual-encryption using program map tables

The present invention is directed towards providing a partial dual-encrypted stream in a conditional access overlay system. The headend equipment includes an aligner, identifier, and remapper (AIR) device () that receives a clear stream and one or two encrypted streams, where the two encrypted streams have been encrypted by two different encryption schemes. The AIR device () identifies critical packets associated with the clear stream and subsequently allows two encrypted streams to pass and drops the critical packets of the clear stream. A multiplexer () then combines a percentage of the non-critical packets of the clear stream and the critical packets of the two encrypted streams to provide the partial dual-encrypted stream.

Methods and apparatus for providing a partial dual-encrypted stream in a conditional access overlay system

The present invention is suitable for use in a partial dual encrypted system. The present invention allows for two different decryption devices (e.g., an incumbent, or first, set-top and an overlay, or second, set-top) to be located in a single system having an incumbent encryption scheme and a second encryption scheme. Each set-top is designed to decrypt the first or second proprietary encryption schemes, respectively. In accordance with the present invention, the second set-top utilizes a novel program map table to ensure that the second set-top chooses correct elementary streams in the partial dual-encrypted stream (i.e., a combined stream including a first encrypted stream, a second encrypted stream, and a clear stream) for a desired program.
