Disclosed herein are devices, systems and methods for performing cell culture using animal-chip hybrids. A cell culture device may comprise a fluid channel portion having a first port at a first end and a second port at a second end, and a first compartment for culturing cells. A continuous or intermittent perfusion of blood from an animal subject may enter the cell culture device at the first port and exit the cell culture device at the second port.

Methods of performing animal research

An electronic monitor can monitor experimental animals in a cage. The cage has one or more walls that enclose a living space for the experimental animals. The electronic monitor is coupled to the cage. The electronic monitor may include a housing adapted to be mechanically coupled to the cage in a predefined position relative to the cage. A substantially sterile barrier is provided between the living space and the external environment in this coupled state. The walls of the cage may include a signal-interface section. An electromagnetic detector may be coupled to the housing to have a line-of-sight through the signal-interface section and into the living space of the cage. The electromagnetic detector is adapted to detect electromagnetic radiation that is transmitted through the signal-interface section. A controller processes a signal received from the electromagnetic detector to determine a status of the experimental animals or the living space.

Electronic monitor for experimental animals

Methods of measuring attributes of animal urine, using a test pad comprising multiple test patches and urine detection patches in a BAYER pattern is described. The pad comprises different test patches, each surrounded by urine detection patches. When a camera, electronics and software automatically detect fresh urine from a color change of a detection patch, nearby test patches are read with a color camera, after a specific time delay, and compared to color reference spots. Multiple layers and isolation zones in the test pad allow urine to enter the test and detection patches, while keeping urine puddles from spreading. Once used, detection and test patches are not used again. An array of many detection and test patches allows the test pad to be used for multiple urine samples in one vivarium cage before replacing. Embodiments use a mix of IR and white light, and IR cameras and color cameras.

Device and method of measuring animal urine

A transponder and system are described for sharing vehicle lane data in a vehicle-to-vehicle safety system. It generates and broadcasts internally generated location points; and receives, processes and stores lane data received from other equipped vehicles. Physical lanes are represented by a sequence of logical lanes. Both the internal and external location points are aggregated into logical lanes. These logical lanes in turn are shared between vehicles via requests and replies. Each vehicle, within a temporary range, is considered a distinct vehicle. For each logical lane separate counts are maintained for the number of distinct vehicles that provided internal data, provided internal data shared once, and total data shared more than once. Internal data continues to aggregate until the logical lane changes. Total shared data is capped at a maximum of internal counted distinct vehicles and received distinct vehicle counts, to avoid counting the same (shared) data over and over. Based on the number of distinct vehicles that contributed lane data, a logarithmic confidence value is computed. The confidence value is used to limit sharing from only the confident data sources.

The method includes preparing a first waxy phase, preparing a first volatile phase comprising a first sequestered compound, creating a first emulsion from the first waxy phase and the first volatile phase, depositing the first emulsion on the card, and cooling the first emulsion.

A method of determining a cognitive state of an experimental animal in a cage is provided. The cage includes one or more walls that enclose a living space for containing the experimental animal, and a heating structure. The method includes installing a card with at least a first type of sequestered olfactory compound, directing the heating structure to selectively heat the card to release the first type of sequestered first type of olfactory compound to subject the experimental animal to a novel olfactory experience, creating a first assessment of a behavior of the laboratory animal, subjecting the experimental animal to experimental procedures and/or waiting a selected amount of time, directing the heating structure to selectively heat the card to release more of the first type of sequestered olfactory compound, creating a second assessment of a behavior of the experimental animal, and evaluating the first and second assessments to determine the cognitive state of the experimental animal.

Experimental animal behavioral research methods and apparatuses

The field of this invention is classifying animal behaviors. In particular the fields of this invention include using animals in vivariums, such as rodents, particularly mice. Ultrasonic vocalizations of mice in a vivarium are compared to a predetermined set of positive phenotypes and to a predetermined set of negative phenotypes. The output of those comparisons are then compared to determine a metric of distance to classify vocalizations as closer to or more distant from elements of the positive or negative sets.

The field of this invention is classifying animal behaviors. In particular the fields of this invention include using animals in vivariums, such as rodents, particularly mice. Animal behaviors are classified according to behaviors consistent with healthy or unhealthy organs or locations within organs, such as the brain. Injected neoplastic cells may be used to create an unhealthy organ or location within an organ. Classifications also include responses to different therapies. The behavior of the animals is observed using fully automatic, continuous monitoring using per-cage ultrasonic and video sensors, where behavior recording is free of human, manual actions. Observed behavior is consistent with healthy or unhealthy behaviors specific to the injection site. Both positive and negative baseline behaviors are collected, typically using the same system or method. Classification is responsive to differences between treated and untreated animals, comparing to both the positive and negative baselines, using multi-dimensional analysis.

Device and method of automatic classification of animal behaviors using vocalizations

The field of this invention is recording motion of an animal, uniquely identifying the animal, and recording an activity of that animal. Motions of animals on a path when the animal is or can be uniquely identified are tracklets. Tracklets begin and end at ambiguation events, where these are defined as locations and times of an animal where it cannot be uniquely identified. A first animal may be uniquely identified by first identifying all other animals in the first animal's environment. Animal identification may be after the end of a tracklet. Embodiments use optical flow analysis from video of an animal's environment. Embodiments record an animal's activity on tracklets and then use that activity to measure animal health or use that activity as data for a study using animals.

Tracklets

An animal exercise device is described in the form a rotating wheel, generally cylindrical in form, open on one face for an animal to enter and exit, and solidly closed on the other face, which also provides a bearing for rotation. The wall and closed face are solid to avoid injury to an animal. The wheel's axis of rotation is at an angle from horizontal. The inside surface of the wall comprises spaced ridges for gripping by the animal's toes or feet. A contrasting marking on the outside surface of the wall aids vision-based rotation measurement. Embodiments are supported solely through the bearing and have no rotation drive other than use by an animal. Methods of use include automated measurement, using equipment external to the cage, of animal health and use in a multihoused cage where unique animal ID is associated with wheel use.

Animal exercise wheel

A cage for housing at least one experimental animal is disclosed. The cage may include one or more walls that enclose a living space for at least one experimental animal with at least one wall comprising a plastic material. At least one electrical feedthrough may traverse the wall. The electrical feedthrough may include an internal electrical contact located inside the living space and an external electrical contact located outside the living space. The internal and external electrical contacts may be electrically connected. A system for monitoring at least one experimental animal and an electrical feedthrough for providing electrical continuity through a wall of a cage for housing an experimental animal is also disclosed.

A wireless, sterilizable scale comprising an upper module, on which an animal sits or explores, and a lower module that measures the weight of the animal. The lower module comprises a flexible membrane, through which the weight of the upper module and the animal is mechanically coupled. The flexible membrane is affixed at its perimeter to the perimeter of the lower module. The lower module is sealed by the membrane and comprises a load cell, batteries and electronics. The upper module removes easily from the lower module leaving the lower module intact and sealed for chemical sterilization. Electronics in the upper module connects to electronics in the lower module via an electrical connector that also penetrates the flexible membrane. IR communications from the upper modules transmits a series of weight values at two different data rates. The scale may be in a sterile cage free of electrical penetrations.

Sterilizable wireless animal scale

A method is described for managing risk messages in a distributed, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) safety system that limits broadcast storms during an omnidirectional rebroadcast of risk messages in a range larger than a radio range. A group of self-organized transponders, such as may be in vehicles, broadcasts, in a shared medium, real-time safety messages, using self-assigned time slots in regular, contiguous time intervals. Relative locations of up to four distinct transponders are computed and compared, along with a geographic angle formed by three transponders. Risk messages are not rebroadcast when another vehicle, farther from the originating vehicle, has already rebroadcast the same message. Risk values may be single-digit integers, created by adding sub-risk values responsive to real-time vehicle behavior, traffic, weather, road conditions, and the risk history of a road segment. Risk messages are free of fixed vehicle or transponder identification.
