A rotor system for an aircraft includes an open rotor assembly comprising a plurality of rotor blades connected to a rotor mast via a yoke, wherein the rotor assembly is tiltable between a first position corresponding to an airplane mode and a second position corresponding to a helicopter mode; and a drive system for providing rotational energy to the open rotor assembly via the rotor mast, the drive system comprising at least one electric motor for providing rotational energy to a drive shaft and a gearbox connected to the drive shaft for receiving rotational energy from the at least one electric motor via the drive shaft and providing rotational energy to the rotor mast via a rotor shaft; wherein the drive system is rotatable relative to the wing about a tilt axis and the rotor shaft is coaxial with the drive shaft.

A teetering rotor assembly includes a rotor yoke and a plurality of rotor blades. The rotor yoke includes a hub portion that includes a shaft aperture and two teetering hinge cutouts. The rotor yoke further includes a plurality of pitched yoke arms. Each pitched yoke arm is coupled to the hub portion and includes one or more feathering bearings. Each pitched yoke arm includes a precone axis that is elevated at a precone angle relative to a plane of rotation of the rotor yoke. Each pitched yoke arm includes a twist axis that is twisted at a twist angle relative to the plane of rotation of the rotor yoke. Each rotor blade is configured to couple to a pitched yoke arm via the feathering bearings. Each rotor blade includes a root end that comprises a twisted shape to match the twist axis of a particular one of the pitched yoke arms.

A rotor system for an aircraft includes a rotor assembly comprising a plurality of rotor blades connected to a rotor mast, wherein the rotor assembly is tiltable relative to a wing of the aircraft between a first position corresponding to an airplane mode of the aircraft and a second position corresponding to a helicopter mode of the aircraft; and a drive system for providing rotational energy to the rotor assembly via the rotor mast. The drive system includes at least one electric motor for generating rotational energy to a motor shaft; and a gearbox connected to receive rotational energy from the at least one electric motor via the motor shaft and to provide rotational energy to the rotor mast via a rotor shaft, wherein the at least one electric motor is fixed relative to the wing of the aircraft.

A rotor blade retention device for use in an aircraft having a plurality of blades includes an array of cavities, each cavity adapted to receive a portion of a tension-torsion strap therein. Each cavity is oriented such that, when the portion of the tension-torsion strap is received therein, a central plane of the tension-torsion strap is inclined relative to a blade plane of rotation defined by the plurality of blades. The retention device may have a body that defines an aperture adapted to receive a portion of a rotor mast of the aircraft, may comprise a rotor mast of the aircraft, or may comprise first and second plates that cooperate to form the array of cavities and that are adapted to receive a portion of the rotor mast of the aircraft.

A rotor assembly has a rotor hub having a unitary structure. The rotor assembly further includes a unitary crosshead having a first upper tab and a first lower tab located vertically below the first upper tab. The first upper tab and the first lower tab define a slot therebetween to accept a first pin of the first rotor blade. A second upper tab and a second lower tab located vertically below the second upper tab define a slot therebetween to accept a second pin of the second rotor blade. A first recess is provided between the first lower tab and the second lower tab so that the crosshead comprises no material directly between at least a portion of the first lower tab and the second lower tab along at least one straight path.

A ducted-rotor aircraft includes a fuselage and first and second ducts that are coupled to the fuselage. Each duct includes a duct ring, a rotor having a plurality of blades, a hub that positions the rotor such that the blades define a blade plane of rotation within the duct ring, and a plurality of stators that are coupled to the hub at respective locations aft of the blade plane of rotation. Each of the plurality of stators defines a leading edge that is slanted toward the blade plane of rotation. The leading edges of the stators are slanted to follow a contour defined by the blades. The leading edges may also be slanted to maintain a distance of at least one blade inboard chord length between the leading edges of the stators and respective trailing edges of the blades.

A system for retaining a folded proprotor blade in flight. The system includes a mounting plate, a first arm coupled to the mounting plate at an acute angle relative to the mounting plate, and a first deformable pad affixed to the first arm and adapted to contact the folded proprotor blade.

In an embodiment, a duct for a ducted-rotor aircraft includes a hub, the hub including a rotor and one or more motors configured to drive the rotor. The duct also includes a duct ring that defines an opening surrounding at least a portion of the hub. The duct also includes a plurality of stators that extend outward from the hub. The duct also includes at least one battery electrically coupled to the rotor and configured to power the one or more motors.

A tip gap monitoring system for a ducted aircraft having a proprotor system including a duct and a plurality of proprotor blades includes sensors coupled to the proprotor system. The sensors are configured to detect one or more parameters of the proprotor system to form a plurality of sensor measurements. The tip gap monitoring system also includes a flight control computer in data communication with the sensors. The flight control computer includes a tip gap measurement module configured to determine a tip gap distance between the duct and the proprotor blades based on the sensor measurements.
