Aspects of the present disclosure may include a method and/or a system for applying, to one or more surface electrode trapped ions, a first electric field in a first direction, applying, to the one or more surface electrode trapped ions, a plurality of second electric fields in a second direction while applying the first electric field, wherein the second direction is substantially orthogonal to the first direction, measuring, for each of the plurality of second electric fields, a corresponding micromotion signal associated with the application of one or more of the first electric field or one of the plurality of second electric fields, identifying a maximum micromotion signal of a plurality of micromotion signals associated with the plurality of second electric fields, and identifying a compensation field associated with the maximum micromotion signal.

Methods and apparatuses for stray field compensation normal to a surface electrode ion trap

The use of multiple ion chains in a single ion trap for quantum information processing (QIP) systems is described. Each chain can have its own set of laser beams with which to implement and operate quantum gates within that chain, where each chain may therefore correspond to a single quantum computing register or core. Operations can be performed in parallel across all of these chains as they can be treated independently from each other. To implement and operate quantum gates between different chains, neighboring chains are merged into a single, larger chain, in which one can perform quantum gates between any of the ions in the larger chain. The combined chains can then be separated again by another shuttling event as needed. To implement and operate quantum gates between ions which do not occupy neighboring chains, swap gates can be used via a sequence of intervening chains.

Quantum computer based on manipulation of ion chains

Aspects of the present disclosure describe devices trapping devices for use in quantum information processing (QIP) architectures, and more particularly, to the use and fabrication of a multi-layer ion trap on shaped glass or dielectric substrate. A method for fabricating the ion trap is described that includes preparing a back surface of the substrate, building a multi-layer stack on the top surface of the substrate, and completing the back etch to break through the substrate and etching through a metal and dielectric in the multi-layer stack to complete the formation of the ion trap. Shaping of the ion trap may also include trap narrowing features, wings, and/or undercutting. An ion trap fabricated using this approach may be used in a QIP system to trap atomic species provided through a hole in the back of the substrate for use as qubits in quantum operations and computations.

Multi-layer ion trap on shaped glass or dielectric substrate

Aspects of the present disclosure describe techniques for fast stabilization of multiple controller beams with continuous integrating filter. For example, a method is described for intensity stabilization of laser beams (e.g., ion controller beams) in a trapped ion system, where the method includes applying a linear array of laser beams to respective ions in a linear array of ions in a trap, performing, in response to the laser beams being applied, parallel measurements on the ions, the parallel measurements including multiple, separate measurements on each of the ions to identify fluctuations in intensity in the respective laser beams at each ion, and adjusting the intensity of one or more of the laser beams in response to fluctuations being identified from the parallel measurements. A corresponding system for intensity stabilization of laser beams in a trapped ion system is also described.

Fast intensity stabilization of multiple controller beams with continuous integrating filter

Aspects of the present disclosure may include a method and/or a system for identifying an ion chain having a plurality of trapped ions, selecting at least two non-consecutive trapped ions in the ion chain for implementing a qubit, applying at least a first Raman beam to shuttle at least one neighbor ion of the at least two non-consecutive trapped ions from a ground state to a metastable state, and applying at least a second Raman beam to one or more of the at least two non-consecutive trapped ions, after shuttling the at least one neighbor ion to the metastable state, to transition from a first manifold to a second manifold.

Methods and apparatuses for cross-talk mitigation

The disclosure describes various aspects of a software-defined quantum computer. For example, a software-defined quantum computing architecture for allocating qubits is described that includes an application programming interface (API); a quantum operating system (OS) on which the API executes, with the quantum OS including a resource manager and a switch; and a plurality of quantum cores connected by the switch of the quantum resource OS. Moreover, the resource manager of the quantum resource OS determines an allocation of a plurality of qubits in the plurality of quantum cores.

Software-defined quantum computer

The disclosure describes various aspects of a software-defined quantum computer. For example, a method is described for generating an intermediate representation of source code for a software-defined quantum computer. The method includes performing a lexical analysis on a high-level intermediate representation of a quantum programming language; performing semantic analysis on an output of the lexical analysis; and generating a mid-level intermediate representation of the quantum programming language based on an output of the semantic analysis.

The disclosure describes various aspects of different for automated testing of optical assemblies. A system is described that includes an arm (e.g., a motorized arm) configured to be positioned over an optical assembly having a base plate with multiple optical elements that form one or more optical beam paths. The system also includes at least one optical tool that is configured to be removably attached to the arm and has a measurement instrument to perform a specified test on at least one of the optical beam paths. The arm is configured to adjust its position over the optical assembly to move the optical tool to the correct place to perform the specified test. The system may also include an optical tool changer configured to hold the optical tool in a tool holder when not attached to the arm and to hold additional optical tools in respective tool holders.

Automated testing of optical assemblies

Aspects of the present disclosure describe techniques for mitigating charging on optical windows. For example, a device for mitigating charges inside a chamber of a trapped ion system is described that includes an array of parallel wires formed from a single, conductive plate by cutting elongated gaps through an entire thickness of the conductive plate that separate the wires, an outer portion of the conductive plate to which the wires are attached is configured to position the wires to run parallel to one or more trapped ions in the chamber and to position the wires between a dielectric component of the chamber and the one or more trapped ions. A chamber with such an array of parallel wires and a method of using such an array of parallel wires are also described.

Mitigation of charging on optical windows

The disclosure describes various aspects of a software-defined quantum computer. For example, a software-defined quantum computer and an expandable/modular quantum computer are described. Also described are at least a software-defined quantum architecture, a resource manager workflow, a quantum compiler architecture, hardware description language configuration, levels of application programming interface (API) access points, and exception handling in software-defined quantum architecture.

The disclosure describes aspects of laser cavity repetition rate tuning and high-bandwidth stabilization of pulsed lasers. In one aspect, an output optical coupler is described that includes a cavity output coupler mirror, a piezoelectric actuator coupled to the cavity output coupler mirror, a locking assembly within which the cavity output coupler mirror and the piezoelectric actuator are positioned, and one or more components coupled to the locking assembly. The components are configured to provide multiple positional degrees of freedom for tuning a frequency comb spectrum of the pulsed laser (e.g., tuning a repetition rate) by adjusting at least one position of the locking assembly with the cavity output coupler mirror. A method of adjusting an output optical coupler in a pulsed laser is also described. These techniques may be used in different applications, including quantum information processing.

Laser cavity repetition rate tuning and high-bandwidth stabilization

The disclosure describes various aspects of a shed-resistant thermal atom source. More specifically, a thermal atom source is described for uniform thermal flux of target atomic species in which a metal wadding material is used as an intermediary surface for sublimation of the atoms, preventing the source material from shedding or dropping. In an aspect, a thermal atom source may include a container with closed and open ends, and inside a source material near the closed end and a wadding between the source material and the open end; a heater coupled to the closed end; one or more clamps configured to secure the container and the heater; and a current source coupled to the container and the heater to cause a temperature to increase such that a portion of the source material is released and diffuses to the open end through the wadding prior to being emitted as a flux.

Shed-resistant thermal atom source

The disclosure describes various aspects of acousto-optic modulator (AOM) configurations for quantum processing. A method is described including generating, by a first AOM from a laser beam, first and second diffracted laser beams at different angles based on first and second radio frequency (RF) tones. An optical component focuses the diffracted laser beams onto a second AOM, which generates third and fourth diffracted laser beams based on the first RF tone and a third RF tone and the second RF tone and a fourth RF tone respectively, wherein the third and fourth diffracted laser beams are substantially parallel when incident on a respective ion in a chain of ions in a trap. Quantum information in the ion is controlled to perform quantum processing based on the third and fourth diffracted laser beams. Another method is described including generating, by an AOM, a small polarization rotation of an undiffracted laser beam.
