The bulk volume of large numbers of loose, separated, multiply bent, irregularly shaped scrap sheet metal is temporarily reduced, for transportation and storage of the metal for recycling purposes, by compressing the metal into temporary, compacted wafers formed of successively compacted layers. The apparatus includes a load chamber which is axially aligned with a compression chamber and a reciprocating ram which passes through the chambers towards an anvil plate which closes the discharge end of the compression chamber. A pre-determined quantity of loose pieces is placed within the load chamber. The reciprocating ram compresses the pieces of that batch into a thin layer. Successive batches are compressed into overlapping layers which are temporarily bound together, face-to-face, to form a unitary wafer, by temporarily bending and intertwining the peripheral edges of the layers. The layers are subsequently separated for recycling by depositing into a melt furnace.

Apparatus and method for temporarily compressing loose, multiply bent, pieces of scrap sheet metal into compacted wafers

A system and method for compressing scrap metal. The scrap metal is compressed in a portable container. The container rests on two scales that rest above the ground surface. The fullness of the container is primarily evaluated based on the weight of the container. The scrap metal is initially delivered to a static compactor to which the container is mated. The compactor includes a ram that forces the scrap metal into and compresses the scrap metal in the container. The weight of the container is continually monitored while the container is mated to the compactor. The actuation of the ram is controlled so that, as the amount of scrap metal in the container increases, the frequency with which the ram is actuated increases. After the volume of scrap metal in the container increases above a certain level, each actuation of the ram actual comprises running the ram through plural extension and retraction cycles. The weight of the container is employed as the primary variable upon which the fullness of the ram is evaluated. The pressure of the hydraulic fluid that actuates the ram is also monitored. Even if the container weight is below a set weight, if the hydraulic pressure exceeds a set pressure, the container is considered full.

System and method for compacting and transporting scrap metal

A system and method for determining the fullness of a large capacity waste container (20). Each time the a compactor (22) is used to compress the waste in the container a monitoring unit (24) determines the highest hydraulic pressure generated by the compactor during a selected period of compactor use. The monitoring unit also maintains a count of how often the compactor is used. After the container is filled and emptied a number of times, the monitoring unit then divides the highest hydraulic pressures for the uses by the number of uses to obtain a pressure/use value. This pressure/use value is used as a variable to determine a maximum uses value representative of the number of times the compactor can be used before a container is filled. Once a container data representative of how full a container is, and how many compactor uses remain, is calculated by comparing the number of times the container has been used since it was emptied to the maximum uses value. The system can also forecast when, at a time in the future, the container will be filled.

System and method for evaluating the fill state of a waste container and

A system (22) for monitoring the fullness of a waste container (20). Waste in the container is compressed by a ram (26). The system includes a sensor (42) for monitoring the force employed to actuate the ram. A container state processor (46) receives the signal from the sensor. The container state processor generates data representative of the fullness of the container. The data generated by the container state processor are transmitted through a modem (50) over the public telephone network to a remote location such as to waste hauler's dispatcher. The system also includes a supervisory processor (58) that is connected to both the container state processor and the modem. The supervisory processor monitors operating state signals generated by both the container state processor (46) and the modem (50). If the operating state signals generated by the container state processor (46) indicate that it is malfunctioning, the supervisory processor (58) attempts to correct for this malfunction. If the operating state signals generated by the modem (50) indicate this it is malfunctioning, the supervisory processor (58) attempts to correct for the malfunction. If corrections for the malfunctions are unsuccessful, the supervisory processor (58) broadcasts an error message over a second modem (136).
