The present application concerns an optical device for controlling light, the optical device including: a first waveguide for receiving a light beam from an external light source, at least a second waveguide, an optical coupler for coupling a light beam from the first waveguide to the second waveguide, a beam shaping structure with a light emitting area for emitting a light beam, wherein the second waveguide is configured to guide a light beam coupled from the first waveguide to the beam shaping structure, wherein the beam shaping structure is configured to propagate a light beam received from the second waveguide to the light emitting area such that the beam divergence of a light beam emitted from the light emitting area is lower than the beam divergence of the light beam received from the second waveguide.

An optical device including a primary fan-out waveguide; at least one secondary fan-out waveguide; a fan-out optical coupler for coupling a light beam between the primary fan-out waveguide and the secondary fan-out waveguide; at least one bus waveguide associated with the at least one secondary fan-out waveguide and different from each secondary fan-out waveguide; and a reflecting and coupling structure connecting the secondary fan-out waveguide and the bus waveguide.

Optical device for controlling light includes: a substrate with a boundary surface and with a border region contacting the boundary surface, a waveguide formed within the substrate for guiding a light beam, and an optical structure, wherein the waveguide bends towards the boundary surface of the substrate for directing the light beam at the optical structure, wherein the border region is arranged at least partially in an optical path between the waveguide and the optical structure, and wherein there is provided for a contact structure contacting the border region at the boundary surface, wherein the contact structure has a refractive index, which is lower than the refractive index of the substrate in the border region.

An optical device for controlling light from an external light source including: at least a first and a second waveguide for guiding a light beam emitted from the external light source; and at least a first beam shaping structure with a first light emitting area for emitting a light beam and a second beam shaping structure with a second light emitting area for emitting a light beam, wherein the first waveguide guides the light beam emitted from the external light source to the first beam shaping structure and the second waveguide guides the light beam emitted from the external light source to the second beam shaping structure; wherein the first and the second beam shaping structure-are each configured such that the uniformity of the radiant density profile of a light beam emitted from the respective light emitting area of the respective beam shaping structure is higher than that of the light beam guided to the respective beam shaping structure by the respective waveguide. Backlight unit including such an optical device; and optical system, in particular holographic display, including such a backlight unit and a spatial light modulator.
