An access control system and a method for operating an access control system are provided. The access control system includes an access control device. The method provides a step for initiating the transmission of the advertising signal by a communication module of the access control device, the advertising signal being received by a mobile device. The method provides a step for automatically receiving an access credential from the mobile device to the communication module of the access control device. The method provides a step for comparing, in an authentication module, the access credential with an authorized access credential (e.g., stored in a memory of the access control device).

A regional lock-state control system for operation within a region, includes a server, a plurality of mobile devices and a plurality of lock assembles. The server is configured to initiate a lock-state event. The mobile devices are each configured to receive a wireless lock-state directive from the server upon the lock-state event, and send a wireless lock lock-state directive to the server. The lock assemblies are each configured to receive a lock-state command associated with the lock-state directive from the plurality of mobile devices, and are each configured to transmit an advertisement that includes data on a lock-state.

A system for managing accessing to a locking device is disclosed. A group of users can register with a social networking service and an access management application hosted by the social networking service. A first user can grant, to a second user connected to the first user, access to the locking device and contents thereof. The access management application can notify the second user of the access, and the second user can initialize a mobile application on a mobile device. The mobile application can synchronize with the access management application to verify credentials of the second user. The second user can use the mobile device to connect, via a short-range communication connection, to the locking device and open the locking device.
