The present relates to novel bioactive amphiphilic kanamycin compounds having the general formula of: where R may be a Cto Cbranched or straight chained alkyl group or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group. Also provided are methods of synthesizing and methods of using the compounds of the present invention. The compounds of the present invention are useful in treating and preventing various fungal and bacterial diseases.

Amphiphilic kanamycin compositions and methods

The present invention relates to novel fungicidal compound including an aminoglycoside analog having certain substituents at the 6 position of ring III that exhibit improved antifungal activity but possess minimal antibacterial properties in combination with fungicidal azoles. The aminoglycoside compounds are analogues of kanamycin A. Also provided are methods of synthesizing and methods of using the compounds of the present invention. The compounds of the present invention are useful in treating or preventing fungal disease.

A method for controlling infections caused by protozoans, such as,and,The method comprises using syringomycin-family lipodepsipeptides, preferably syringomycins such as syringomycin E, to control or prevent infections caused by protozoans. The method is directed to therapeutic treatment of mammals, such as humans, exposed to protozoans, and additionally as a prophylactic treatment in immunocompromised subjects at high risk for contracting protozoan infections.

Method of controlling protozoan infections using syringomycin-family lipodepsipeptides

Lipodepsipeptides from Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae were evaluated for antifungal activity. Specifically, the in vitro antifungal and fungicidal activities of three cyclic lipodepsinonapeptides syringomycin E, syringotoxin B, and syringostatin A against medically important isolates were evaluated using a standard broth microdilution susceptibility method. Erythrocyte toxicity was also evaluated. All three compounds showed broad antifungal activity and fungicidal action against most of the fungi tested. In addition, the present invention relates to a novel method for suppressing the immune system of mammals using cyclic lipodepsipeptides. The ability of cyclic lipodepsipeptides to suppress the immune system was evaluated in mitogen-induced lymphocytes. One cyclic lipodepsipeptide, syringomycin-E significantly inhibited mitogen--induced lymphocytes stimulation by pokeweed mitogen, phytohemagglutinin, and monoclonal antibodies to CD3. These results indicate that lipodepsipeptides are useful at suppressing both cellular and humoral immune responses.
